CREST HAVEN — “I’m so proud of you all. You’ve begun a career,” said Maggie Gannon, director of the Crest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, to a group of recent graduates of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program.
On Dec. 4, the graduates along with their families and friends gathered for a ceremony at Crest Haven, where the students received five weeks of classroom and clinical instruction within the nursing environment.
The clinical training was held at Crest Haven as well North Cape Center nursing home.
“I started out as a nursing assistant myself 100 years ago,” Gannon told the graduates noting that CNAs are on the frontline of healthcare because they know the patients’ needs before everyone else.
CNAs are individuals who works directly under the direction of a nurse to assist patients in their daily activities such as feeding, bathing, dressing and meeting the residents’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
The instruction was provided by PRN Training Center, a licensed training provider, dedicated to teaching motivated students their philosophy of providing the highest quality of care to individuals that do not have the ability to care for themselves.
PRN trainer Paulette Mayo said she was proud that 18 students started this graduating class and all of them completed the training. Of the 18 graduates, nine had perfect attendance and 10 had “A” averages in their coursework. The class Valedictorian Samantha Smith finished with a 95 percent grade point average and Salutatorian Denise Warren finished with a 94 average.
Other graduates were: Regina Aylmer, Rachael Bohn, Jennifer Crohe, Patricia Dolan, Anthony Gaghan, Imani Goolsby, Jonnavi Hazel, Elizabeth Hess, Ashley Johnson, Gloria Laboy, Ashley Leaming, Mandy Palasch, Horace Parquer, Jessica Phillips and Courtney Shelton.
According to its Web site, one of PRN’s goals is to provide the people of Southern New Jersey with employment opportunities in the healthcare field. In addition to training, PRN provides employment and retention services to every one of its students who complete the program.
According to another PRN trainer, Darlene Rattan, some of the graduates were already offered employment at Crest Haven and North Cape. In addition, representatives from Oceana Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Court House were at the graduation ceremony to conduct interviews for open CNA positions.
