Surf & Skate Events Celebrate Memory of Brendan Borek

By Leslie Truluck

AVALON- Skateboarders of all age groups showed off their ollies and kick turns at the Method Skate Jam hosted by Avalon Recreation Department Aug. 14 at 29th Street boardwalk skatepark.
The event was part of a weeklong borough-wide celebration in memory of Brendan Borek to raise funds for young people diagnosed with cancer.
Borek succumbed in 1991 to Ewing’s Sarcoma, bone cancer, when he was 16-years-old. His family and friends established the not-for-profit Brendan Borek High Tides Memorial Fund, known as “Brendan’s Fund,” in 1992.
Its mission is to provide comprehensive assistance to young people diagnosed with cancer and their families. Services include counseling and advocacy programs as well as financial and material assistance.
Throughout the week of Aug. 8-15 many borough restaurants and stores offered part or all of their proceeds to benefit Brendan’s Fund.
Several events to celebrate his interests and hobbies, chief among them skateboarding and surfing, raise funds and cancer awareness.
There were 241 surfers who participated in the 19th Annual Surf Contest and Circle of Friends Ceremony Aug. 15.
In the circle ceremony at noon, surfers paddle beyond the breakers, and join hands to form a large circle in memory of Borek off 30th Street beach.
About 340 attended the annual Homecoming Party at Community Hall that evening.
