Bishop McHugh
Under the Direction of Team Mercy, the students of Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School collected pet food, supplies, and old towels and blankets throughout the month of October.
These much-needed items were taken to the Beacon Animal Shelter on Butter Road in Palermo Friday, Nov. 6.
In other news, Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School is again participating in the national Math Olympiads program. Twenty students are enrolled on this year’s team consisting of sixth, seventh and eighth graders.
The students meet once a week with the team’s moderator, Jean McFadden, and work on challenging math problems. Once a month the students take a test nationally competing with other students across the country.
Glenwood Avenue Elementary School
It was the perfect fit. Third grade students at Glenwood Avenue Elementary School and senior citizens from Sandman Towers participated in the “Buddy Project” in October. Two third grade classes walked to Sandman Towers and read to many of the residents in the Housing Authority’s community room. There was a buzz throughout the room as students moved from resident to resident reading poetry, jokes and short stories. The event brought lots of smiles from everyone involved. It was a perfect day!
Lower Township
Christina Lunde’s Kindergarten class, from David C. Douglass Veterans Memorial School, used teamwork and cooperation to create a jungle mural using various art materials after their fieldtrip to the Cape May County Zoo.
In other Lower Township news, students from the Maud Abrams School celebrated national “Mix It Up Day” by inviting the students in third and fourth grade at Crest Memorial School to come to Maud Abrams School for lunch.
During Mix It Up Day at Maud Abrams students are asked to abandon their usual seat in the cafeteria, cross through social boundaries and sit with someone new. While the idea may be simple, it requires courage from students and grown ups. The lessons learned from this day are valuable and students will continue making a difference in their schools throughout the year.
Maud Abrams students hosted students from Crest Memorial first in their classrooms where they were able to experience each other’s classroom. Then students met in the cafeteria for lunch where more than five hundred students were able to pick their own seats meet new friends and have a fun time while dining on hot dogs, chicken, waffle fries, peanut butter & jelly and fruit.
Middle Township
Mrs. Holmes’ third grade class celebrated Veterans Day by inviting Al Campbell to speak to the students. Campbell shared stories about his time in the Navy as a Radioman on the USS Gallant (MSO-489) from July 1970 to September 1971.
Campbell explained that the Gallant left from Long Beach California and traveled to Pearl Harbor Hawaii, Johnston Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Guam, Philipines, and finally to Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam. This voyage took 3 months to complete. The crew’s mission was to patrol a section of the South China Sea.
Mrs. Holmes’ students were able to see a photo of the Gallant, Campbell’s “dog tag”, and Military Payment Currency used in South Vietnam. It was an exciting morning for the class as they also got to see the medals Campbell received during his naval career which include National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
St. Ann Regional School
Principal Sister Sheila Murphy proudly announced 4th grade student Mackenzie Walsh contributed nine inches of her hair to ‘Locks of Love’.
