World of Antiques at Wetlands Institute

By On Deck Staff

Learn more about antiques, or discover the value of some family heirlooms–like grandmother’s old teapot or treasures that have accumulated in the attic–at The World of Antiques, Feb. 17 to March 17 at the Wetlands Institute, 1075 Stone Harbor Blvd., Stone Harbor.
Arthur Schwerdt, senior professional appraiser of the National Association of Professional Appraisers and co-owner of August Farmhouse Antiques, will conduct the popular course that covers a different topic each week.
In addition, participants will get book lists, helpful handouts, guest experts, a mini-library for each topic and an appraisal session each evening for items to be appraised and discussed.
Participants are encouraged to bring in as many items as they want each evening for appraisal and the items need not relate to the evening’s topic.
Classes meet on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and light refreshments will be served.
Topics are: Feb. 17: The Antique Marketplace; Feb. 24: Oriental Antiques; March 3: European and American Porcelain and Pottery; March 10: European and American Glass and Crystal; March 17: Silver, Metals and Costume Jewelry.
Cost is $125 for members for all five classes; $135 for nonmembers and includes a free copy of Schwerdt’s book, “The Antique Story Book: Finding the Real Value of Old Things.”
Individual classes are $25.
Lunch and Learn continues on Tuesdays at the Wetlands Institute 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring lunch; coffee, dessert, and program are provided.
Cost is $3 for members and $5 for nonmembers. Upcoming topics include Horseshoe Crabs with Dr. Dan Hernandez from Stockton College on Feb. 10; New Jersey’s First Wind Park, with Ken Strait from PSE&G on Feb. 17, and Delaware River Update on Feb. 24 with Maya VanRossum, Delaware River keeper.
