Bus Company Sticking It to the County?

By Geltzer

To The Editor:
NJ Transit is at it again, sticking it to the residents and visitors of Cape May County. Wildwood and Cape May are the only towns they care about. They have cut all northbound return service from the following towns: Stone Harbor, Avalon, Sea Isle City and Ocean City. They have buses in the summer running southbound on Ocean Drive until 1 a.m. That means a person can travel from Sea Isle City to Stone Harbor until 1 a.m., but can’t travel from Stone Harbor to Sea Isle City after 6:21 p.m.
Those coming from Philadelphia and New York to these barrier islands can’t get home after 5:24 p.m. — that is the last bus from Stone Harbor to Philadelphia. This is the same exact schedule they have in the winter; no improvements for the summer at all.
They run multiple buses into Cape May City, Routes 552, 313, 315, and 316, and also shuttle buses on the 316. The ridership into Cape May City isn’t that high, yet they service it with more frequency than they service the barrier islands. They have cut all express service between Philadelphia and Ocean City. This also happened in 2007. A person with baggage must take a bus into Atlantic City and transfer to a local 507 bus with baggage.
The 507 bus is a commuter bus that often has people standing all the way to Pleasantville and no place to put luggage. There should be at least some express service between Philadelphia and Ocean City. There is express service between New York and Ocean City. More people from Philadelphia go to Ocean City than people from New York City.
Also since 2002 there has been no express service between Camden and Wildwood. Camden passengers are forced to go into Philadelphia and pay double fare to get to Wildwood. Please help the residents and visitors to these towns (Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Avalon, Stone Harbor). Get back our service that was taken from us in 2007.
To complain about lack of service call NJ Transit directly at 856-968-3810 and ask for Alan Maiman or Carl Pulaski.
