CAPE MAY — It looked as if City Council was meeting in toy land on Tue., Dec., 20.
Behind the dais, presents were stacked on the foot of City Hall Auditorium’s stage around a big Christmas tree. The wrapped boxes and teddy bears were part of the annual Sgt. Bill Alvarez Toy Drive of the Cape May Police Department. The program has continued after Alvarez’s untimely death.
“The other officers of the department stepped up and continue to honor his tradition,” said Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr.
Alvarez’s photo is featured on the gift tag of the presents. The toys were scheduled to be delivered Fri., Dec. 23.
“Over 100 children get about four gifts a piece,” said Mahaney. “It makes a difference and they have a very merry Christmas…”
He thanked Cape May residents for donating the gifts. Donation boxes were placed in churches, stores and Wawa markets.
Residents of Victorian Towers annually donate 40 to 50 teddy bears, said the mayor.
