OCEAN CITY – What is happening in Ocean City? Well, there are a couple of things…
UPDATE:
June 10: The Ocean City Community Center is hosting its second annual Kick-Off-Beach Party on Fri., June 10, 6:30 p.m. at the Flanders Hotel, 11th and Boardwalk. Tickets are $60 per person and include hors d’oeuvres, beverages, full buffet, dessert and dancing. For ticket information, please call Drew, 609-827-8083. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
June 11: The Magic of Chad Juros will be featured at the Ocean City Repertory Theater, 813 Asbury Ave., Sat., June 11 from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Chad has performed in Las Vegas, on TV and Ocean City’s First Night. Ideal for all of the family. Show features magic, illusion, juggling, music and interaction with the audience. Admission is $5 at the door. For reservations, call 609-457-6686.
June 21: (but register as soon as possible) The Ocean City Wellness Committee, in conjunction with the American Red Cross is hosting a Platelet Van on Tues., June 21 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Community Center, 1735 Simpson Ave. Platelets aid in the clotting process to prevent or stop bleeding and are vital in helping cancer, burn and trauma patients. The Platelet Van is self contained and each donation takes from 1.5 to 2 hours. All blood types are needed, especially A and AB types. Donors must weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. The Artisans, based in Philadelphia, will visit Ocean City for its 66th consecutive family weekend June 10-12. This group has supported Ocean City longer than any other organization.
The Artisans have scheduled a show of live music and comedy at the Music Pier, Sat., June 11 starting 7 p.m. It will feature comedic musicians Gary and the Kid and Groucho Marx performer, Ron MacClosky who will host a Lucky Guess Game Show. Those picked to participate compete for cash prizes.
MacClosky has appeared here for years in the Doo Dah Parade, at Martin Mollusk Day and the Miss Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant. The game show is his latest entertainment project and is growing in popularity.
The Organization is led this year by Tom DiLauro, Most Excellent Master Artisan. He will greet the public and receive an Ocean City Piece of the ‘Walk during the program.
The Artisans Order of Mutual Protection was founded in 1873 to provide insurance for working people. It was the second in the nation to provide this service to the public and has endured over the years as an insurance and philanthropic group. The Artisans have supported the Ocean City Food Cupboard and other Ocean City charities over the years.
The Miss New Jersey Boardwalk Parade, featuring contestants from throughout the state, is set for Wed., June 15 starting 7 p.m. The Parade begins at 6th St. and boardwalk, concludes at 14th St. and boardwalk.
The Parade precedes the Miss New Jersey Pageant with preliminaries scheduled for June 16-17 and the final on June 18 at the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.
All contestants will dress as TV characters or TV show themes. The theme idea was instituted by Maribeth Neall, parade director and has become the parade’s most popular feature. It has proved to be a humorous and colorful way to showcase participants.
The Parade also includes floats and individual contingents.
Reigning Miss New Jersey, Ashleigh Udalovas, will lead the Parade on a float. Miss Ocean City, Rachel Reese, will ride the Parade in a lifeguard boat. Little Miss Ocean City, Sadie Ford and Junior Miss Ocean City, Emily Aita will be on floats.
Among the groups participating will be America’s Next Top Models, Dance Express, Atlantic City Figure Skating, Jetson’ and Cleopatra contingents, Girl Scout Troops portraying I Love Lucy and Spongebob Square Pants.
There will be 12 floats including one from the Chatterbox, a perennial favorite.
The Miss New Jersey Pageant will be held at the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, June 16-18. Tickets are available from Mary Lou Cake, $35 for preliminaries and $50 for the final. A package price of all three is available for $100.

On Fri., June 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Ocean City Arts Center, 17th and Simpson Ave., holds its reception for In the Manner of Edward Hopper, interpretations of the great artist by area painters. Don’t miss this one! Admission is free.
On Sat., June 11 at 8 p.m., talented pianist Andrew Hink will perform at the Ocean
City Repertory Theater, 813 Asbury Ave. Andrew will play his original music and a variety of cover songs. Admission is free.
Also on Sat., June 11, the Ocean City Humane Society will hold its Family Golf Outing at the City Golf Course, 24th and Bay Ave. from 8:45 a.m. till noon. This is a shotgun start tournament with prizes, lunch and gift bag for all participants. Cost is $30 per player. The Ocean City Tabernacle, 550 Wesley Ave., continues its outstanding series of programs. Next is a concert by the Touring Youth Choir and Bells from Pompano Beach, Fl., on Sat., June 11 at 7 p.m. John and Lisa Wilson direct the group. Concert is free. For information call 609-399-1915.
The Nor’easters Soccer team hosts the Jersey Spartans on June 12 starting 6 p.m. at Carey Stadium, 6th and Atlantic Ave. There will be a United Way Charity Mascot Race featuring some of the most colorful mascots in the area and other special events. BLOOMSDAY: The Ocean City Repertory Theater presents its 7th Annual staged reading of James Joyce’s Ulysses on Thurs., June 16 from noon till midnight. This unique event travels to numerous locations throughout the City with readings.

Johnson’s Popcorn will celebrate Father’s Day in a big way on Sun., June 19 from
1 to 3 p.m. on the Boardwalk. The celebration includes pony rides on the beach at 12 St., train rides at the 12th St. Children’s Pavilion, face painting, bands, stilt walkers and a Father Look Alike Contest at the Music Pier at 2 p.m. The events are free.

The Ocean City Free Public Library announces its Spring Book Sale on June 24 from 2 to 9 p.m. and June 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in its atrium at 17th and Simpson Ave. Paperbacks, Hardbacks, fiction and non fiction books will be available along with children’s books, audio books, videos, CDs, DVDs, puzzles and games.
REMINDER: The Library’s TED lecture series continues on Thurs., June 9 with a talk by Sam Harris: Science Can Answer Moral Questions, given at a Long Beach CA conference in 2010. Questions of good and evil, right and wrong are usually thought unanswerable by Science but Sam argues otherwise. TED talks are short 15 to 20 minute videos by interesting people speaking about interesting ideas. The talk will be presented on a DVD, 11 a.m. on the 9th in the Library’s Lecture Room N110. A discussion will take place after the lecture. Entry to the lecture room is located on the 17th St. side of the Library. Admission is free.
The First Annual Big Girl Birthday Party will be held in downtown Ocean City Thurs., June 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. The ladies will have f un making jewelry at Potomac Bead Company, decorating a cupcake at Sandcastle Cupcakes, painting a wine glass at Butterfly Boutique, cooking demo at Johnson’s Appliances, Good food from Scully’s, chocolate tasting at Laura’s Fudge, chair massage and late night shopping with birthday specials.
