CompleteCare Health Network Uses Technology to Help Dental Patients

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE — In 2004, CompleteCare Health Network was among the first health practices in the region to make the switch from paper health records to a more efficient Electronic Medical Records system.
Seven years later, while many in the health care industry struggle to catch up on the digital divide, CompleteCare has launch-ed a new system that links patient’s medical records and dental records making it easier for dentists in the practice to better treat patients.
Electronic Medical and Dental Records are a computerized, digital alternative to the traditional paper files used by doctors and dentists. These records allow providers to better track a patient’s medical and dental history by giving them quick and easy access to this information so they can coordinate care and minimize the chance of medical errors.
Electronic Records can be integrated with Web-based registration and digital X-rays, allowing healthcare providers to have instant access to patients’ complete information from anywhere with a secure Internet connection. The time saved allows providers at CompleteCare to see more patients without compromising quality of care.
And since CompleteCare offers primary, specialty and dental care, often under the same roof, providers can instantly refer and schedule a patient for a Medical or Dental visit if they see the need.
“CompleteCare is unique in that many of their patients are also seen by doctors within our health system,” said Dr. Kimberly Benberry, director of Dental at CompleteCare Health Network. “Because of this I can access the patient’s medical record to verify allergies, medications, chronic conditions as they relate to their dental health.”
Recently the Federal government has been encouraging doctors, hospitals and health centers to incorporate Electronic Records into their practices citing numerous benefits including reductions in errors and overall costs.
“In order to provide high-quality care for our nearly 50,000 patients, many of whom are uninsured, it’s important that we stay efficient,” said Gil Walter, president and CEO of CompleteCare. “Electronic Record systems take time, training and money to implement but any investment that helps us provide better care to our patients is money well spent.”
According to a study done by the National Center for Health Statistics, one-quarter of office-based providers in the U.S. reported using fully or partially electronic medical record systems in 2005.
However, less than 10 percent of these providers actually have a complete system with all four basic functions deemed minimally necessary.
CompleteCare’s system implements all of these functions including: computerized orders for prescriptions, computerized orders for tests, reporting of test results, and physician notes.
Electronic records not only save money and valuable office space they also help ensure quality and continuity of medical and dental care – two important factors that can help save lives.
“If a person sees several of our specialists in addition to their Dentist the entire team will have immediate access to their Electronic Records with the click of a button,” says CompleteCare’s Information Systems Director, Tracy Slotter. “By ensuring that each doctor and dentist is aware of the patient’s full diagnoses and treatment we are better able to manage care.”
Innovations like Electronic Dental and Medical Records are just a part of the services that CompleteCare provides at their 19 community and school-based health centers, including their center on Route 9 in Court House.
“We must continue to evolve in ways that will provide our patients with the care they deserve,” said Dr. Benberry. “At the end of the day that’s what matters most.”
CompleteCare Health Network Community Health Care, Inc. is accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and is a Federally Qualified Health Center.
