OCEAN CITY – On Sun. Sept. 25, at 4:12 p.m., Ocean City Police and Fire Departments responded to the 5500 block of the beach for a water rescue.
Upon arriving at the scene the responding agencies were advised that there were two swimmers in distress, one male and one female. The responding officers and fire units initiated a water rescue.
Both swimmers were brought to the shore by the emergency responders and they were transported to Shore Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. The persons rescued were reported to be from the New York City area.
Rescue efforts to save Raymond R. Blanco Jr, 24, of Bronx, N.Y. were not successful. First responders arrived and began CPR on the beach.
Blanco was transported to the hospital but never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead shortly after the incident occurred. Blanco was pulled from the water by a female friend, who was also treated at the hospital and released, along with other bystanders.
A third male was able to make it to shore without assistance after being caught it what was believed to be a “rip current”.
