Sea Isle City Police Warn Residents to Beware of Phone Scam

By Press Release

SEA ISLE CITY – The Sea Isle City Police Department would like to warn its residents to be cautious about various phone scams going around. Here are examples of the scam:
– Victims of the scam are receiving phone calls from people claiming to be the Internal Revenue Service and a warrant has been issued for back taxes. The callers claim those taxes must be paid immediately through a credit card, pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer.
– Victims are receiving calls from people claiming to be from the Electric Company and stating that somebody is on their way out to turn off their electric if they are not paid immediately through a credit card, pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer.
The Internal Revenue Service will send a letter to inform you of back taxes and will never ask for payment by credit card or wire transfer over the phone.
The Electric Company (Atlantic City Electric) will also send out warning notices if you have not paid your electric bill.
If you are unsure about the call, just hang up.
Suspicious calls of this nature should also be reported to the Sea Isle City Police Department at 609-264-4311.
You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.FTC.gov. Add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments in your complaint.
