  • Scary Big Government: What are you willing to pay?

On January 20, 2009, I will be watching the 44th President being sworn in. I look upon this day with a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, their might be some positive change for our country. I want to think positive but, these days, I am finding it very hard to look past the election, let alone towards a bright tomorrow. My family seems to be more optimistic. I am so sad by the future that seems to be headed our way. Conservative values aside, Obama and I do not see answers in the same light. He thinks being governed by the government, in whole, is a more clean cut way for success. I feel it sets the United States up for failure.

Maybe, I have had to much involvement with the government. I was schooled by a public school, I had a father that worked for the government and now even my own husband is under the thumb of the government employer. The government, government jobs included, is filled with politics. Slacker workers are hard to fire, and overachievers are under credited. This makes for hard coworkers and terrible service. This makes reason for the cranky DMV workers and that police officers have a high stress rate.

I am suppose to look forward to having more government involvement. I am suppose to be looking forward to things being monitored and regulated and offered to me through the government? Hmmmmm....Sounds like a great plan to me.

I truly believe I have seen first hand how the government is disorganized and constantly failing in the child protective services. I had been a foster mom for the past 2.5 years. I called it quits because the devastation the department was bringing to the children in my home was more then I could handle. (yes the Government was more then I could handle, not the Goodbyes) Now, 23 children later, 23 sob stories, 23 children that I love had got lost in this state run system. Children had been forgotten about. Workers had showed up at my door days after the placed child had been moved to another home. College students took children to and from the doctors with no record of what was discussed during the visit. Forgive me for not trusting the government's ability to be efficient and organized.

I am more convinced, now then ever, the destruction that the government offices can bring. Being put there for the benefit of children they can actually do more harm then good. Will they serve the general citizens better then these precious children that have already had a hard life??? Will the government do more harm, then good!

Do you think it will be any easier with health care? We will now become numbers and health records, instead of people that need medical assistance. We will now become customers of underpaid, overworked employees. We will now have to wait on the phone to gain access to our own provider information. We will now have to talk to a telephone operator that could careless if she gives you the correct or the wrong information.

While it maybe less draining to my pocket, when I am truly sick, I will be left waiting in line while hypochondriacs get to be seen before me. They will wear out the health professionals. They will be annoyed and frustrated and take it out on the doctors. By the time I will be seen, my problems will be passed off as nothing important. The state paid health officials won't care because they work for the government, a bigger organization. Far bigger then Elizabeth Norton and her child that has a special health issues. But, It is at low cost, right????

Obama is also looking to establish strength in the educational system. I am one to believe that NO ONE will be as committed to my child's future as ME. His Mom. His Father. Not his GOVERNMENT! I am concerned about private school regulations and the already limited educational options to the parents in the Cape May County. My son has a wonderful teacher. He is in a small classroom and is thriving. The government might not be able to offer what is available to him. Maybe the volchuer thing will come through. Maybe, It will be one of those broken promises that politics plays all to often.

I wonder what the vaccination choice group's takes is on this. It seems to me that this would be a concern. Sometimes, no matter what the issue education, health care and vaccinations, mom knows best. Do you have more faith in the government then me? Please share below!

While something might be easier or Free, Really....nothing is FREE in life. It all comes at a cost. What are you willing to pay? Your child's safety, your child's health, or your chlid's education? On January 20th, I am wondering if I will be handing over a lot of trust in the government. Maybe, more then I want to.

"Let this be a note to my readers: I greatly appreciate some very hard workers at the local DYFS office. The above issues are on DYFS as a whole, not individually"

Thank you for an interesting post.

    My thoughts:

The issue isn't big government vs small government. It is about better government. Our governments work for us and if they fail or function poorly, it is because we as individuals fail to hold our public servants to the standards we expect. The answer isn't less government; the answer setting even higher standards for public service.

That said, the issue with healthcare isn't about private vs. government healthcare. Governments (local and otherwise) play may play a role. The existing system of private health insurance isn't efficient or fair--it penalizes small businesses and self-employed workers. How do we encourage private enterprise, risk-taking and other free-market capitalism ideals when the fear of falling through a health-care crack keeps people shackled to their employer? How do small businesses compete when the continued increases in health-insurance cost far outpaces normal cost of living adjustments?

This isn't to say that the government should step in and provide healthcare insurance to everyone but it does seem that we can have a system that serves everyone without casting this as an either-or problem.
