Breast-feeding a Calf??? Cape May County, are you ready for this????

Kate Garraway, a popular reporter in Britain, got the public in an uproar with her controversial photos. These photos were taken of Garraway "posing" to breast-feed a calf. The pictures were set to promote a documentary on women who breast-feed.

My first views of these pictures left me speechless, which doesn't happen often! I keep on trying to rationalize my reaction thinking: "Why is it acceptable to drink the milk produced by this calf's mother, yet my personal reaction was shock and disgust?" I keep asking myself this same question over and over again.

I am not PRO-FORMULA. I nursed both of my children with my own milk for 6 grueling weeks.

A family member donated her milk to an adopted newborn. It was a beautiful gesture, as she gave something that the adoptive new mother was unable to offer. I think sharing your own milk is a very respectful and wonderful thing.

My friend Alissa, (who is a mom) said that she wouldn't be able to trust anyone that donated to a milk bank. She would be more likely to ask a friend to nurse to make sure they took adequate care of themselves and abstained from drinking alcohol or doing drugs. I wonder, did the cow who produced the milk that she just put in her coffee abstain from drugs and alcohol..LOL?

If I was unable to supply my own milk for my baby, I would be devastated. I personally would be more willing to take breast-milk from a milk bank. I am sure that I would prohibit anyone from bonding with my baby through nursing, friend or not. At least, I would be the one holding the bottle. Formula has never been a stranger to this family and I am confident that my kids are not damaged!

I guest my initial reaction was in-part because the breast is often a form of sex in ads and therefore I was taken back because these pictures are not taken in a sexy manner. They are taken to inform people of the beauty in which God created them for....providing nourishment for your young! I am not saying that breastfeeding a calf is acceptable because that seems odd, awkward, and gross, but Kate Garraway was just posing to prove a point.

I am past the shock! Now I find this picture to be artful and beautiful, in its own way. It raises awareness about breast feeding, milk-banks, and wet nurses. Yes, the picture may be weird but Go Kate!!!

I understand fully your comment. After 6 wks of pumping, I was done. I just could not take anymore. I waited till exactly 6 weeks with my second. I continued to use formula till they were 1. I will never be able to get past the guilt of if it was the right choice or not. I can't seem to grasp that something other then my own milk would be better for my baby. Nothing will ever be more natural the breast milk.

I felt compelled to comment about your breastfeeding blog. When my daughter was born I had the plan to breastfeed... well that plan came to an end when my milk did not come in fast enough and I had a very hungry newborn. We ended up giving her formula, a "milk bank" was never considered and you don't think of that when you a screaming baby. I was very upset for many weeks about giving her formula but ultimately it was the best choice for our family. I know that the medical world tells moms that breast milk is best but the bottom line is that you need to feed you baby, whether it's breast milk or formula. I am now confident in my choice and I know she got all the nutrients (which are not always in breast milk) from formula.
