  • Our Understanding of our Universe is About to Change; Doomsday Theorists Emerge

We are less than 24 hours away from taking the most powerful machine ever created by man online. It is 17 miles long, 300 feet underground, and chilled down to -476 degrees Fahrenheit before it can be used.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a gigantic scientific instrument thatspans the border between France and Switzerland. It is a particle accelerator used by physicists to study the fundamental building blocks of all things - the smallest particles of our universe.

By creating the same conditions that took place shortly after the big bang, tt will revolutionize our understanding, from the miniscule world deep within atoms to the vastness of the Universe.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is preparing for its first small tests in tomorrow, leading to a planned full-track test in September - and the first planned particle collisions before the end of the year.

The appearance of the $6 billion supercollider has fueled fears among doomsday theorists that the powerful subatomic explosions created by the installation could create a black hole that will swallow up the earth.

But despite the relatively limited amount of evidence suggesting the LHC’s potential to create small black holes, the overwhelming consensus among working physicists is that the collider poses no threat whatsoever to humanity or the Earth.

A new report from CERN allegedly puts the final nail in the coffin of doomsday theorists claiming the Large Hadron Collider will result in a reality-ending black hole on Earth. In a word, the report calls the project "safe," and reiterates CERN's original argument that even the most powerful collisions planned for the LHC are nothing compared to what nature has done already for billions of years.

I am very excited to see what new information will result from these collisions as there are many theories, but what's for sure is that a brave new world of physics will emerge from the new accelerator, as knowledge in particle physics goes on to describe the workings of the Universe.

There will surely be more on this topic on my blog soon, so stay tuned.

That's all well and good, Rick, but where's the Bond villain stroking a cat and threatening to CREATE a world-destroying black hole if we don't give into his nefarious demands? That guy in the pic leaning nonchalantly with the blue ladder? (bottom left) Looks like good evil minion material to me. I give it a week before snappily-attired agents of Chaos take over the labs...

Now is it me, or does that thing look like the swings on the boardwalk? The charged $6 billion for that? You can collide in Wildwood for, like, 8 tickets. Best prank ever, Switzerland!
