Fill your Beach Bucket with Blueberries Instead of Sand
Posted: Fri, 07/25/2008 - 9:16amI remember my Mother, as a youngster, calling me every child's name in the house except for my own. I knew she wasn't crazy, in fact at the time I thought she was the smartest person in the world. My name, Beth, is something I had to remind her. I also reminded her that she was the one who named me. I promised myself I would never be so forgetful when I grew up. For some reason, I felt like I would be able to handle this simple task to correctly name call, when I had children of my own.
But I was wrong. I really believe that the more time I am married the more my memory seems to fail. Can I blame this on my husband? I can almost guarantee on a normal morning by ten o'clock the following things routinely happen. I call my husband the name of our dog, Wake, obviously I am somewhat ashamed to confuse the two. The baby became "hey you" as I realize he is the one who has my keys as the rest of the family was searching for them for the past hour. I have also been known to dub my 5 year old by my husband's title. This leaves everyone in the house a little confused and looking at me sideways. Humm, Do you think the same kind of the way I would look at my Mom? This is not the best way to start a day realizing you are just like your mother. It is lucky for me, my mother is a pretty stand up gal, but that doesn't change the fact that my children and husband wonder if my head actually has a brain inside it.
According to a recent study done in England, a blueberry filled diet has the ability to reverse memory loss. "Wow", I thought. I never knew blueberries could ward off the memory "blues" (pun-intended) I was delighted by this information. This was great news!!! I was even more delighted to find a "you pick your own" blueberry farm right in Cape May County. I thought "GREAT" I can wear the kids endless energy out in the sun, get fresh air, get fresh fruit for a discounted rate, and experience some fun all while working on my "memory fitness." Now that is multi-tasking! This was fantastic.
Off we went with buckets to claim our blueberries. At 95 cents per pound at Allen's "You Pick Your Own" farm really was not that much of a splurge for entertainment for the day . This was truly a fabulous berry-licous experience. As we pulled up to the farm house with red shutters, the Allen family greeted us and the other blueberry pickers and pointed us in the best directions to find the fullest bushes. We were on a mission to find blueberries and we sure did. I think it is safe to assume that my son sneaked more as a mid morning snack into his tummy instead of into his pail.
As the sun shone at just the right temperature, it wasn't two hot, it wasn't two windy. It was the perfect day for such an event. My youngest toddler even thought he was doing something constructive as he held the bucket up to the tree. We walked away with 3 pounds of sweet jersey blueberries grown with out pesticides or chemicals, not counting what we already consumed as were were roaming the 4 acre field.
Tomorrow morning blueberry pancakes with blueberry syrup await. Blueberry smoothies for lunch, and frozen blueberries to eat as a snack on a hot day sitting by the pool, and for dinner.... well I will have to think out-of-the-box to coordinate blueberries with that meal.
You could save yourself the risk of tick bites by going to the local Acme and just buying blueberries. However, I do need to say that picking blueberries was a lot more fun then one would think, that is if you have enough blueberries in your diet to remember what you are thinking.
*Blueberry season is almost over-call first if you intend to let your family in on this blueberry fun*

Beth Says:
I just read this and had to share. Evidently, frozen blueberries are great for teething babies. If the mess is to much for you to handle and makes blueberry stains, drench the stain with vinegar and then pour boiling water over the shirt. The stain will disappear like magic.
P.S. Make sure you remove the shirt obviously before (haha)
