Politics as Usual

I have to confess that at the moment Ohio was called for Obama on election night, there was a part of me that felt as though something important had happened. Certainly, in terms of breaking a critical racial barrier, something important did happen. But for a moment I thought maybe this guy could change our politics. Maybe he could rise above the attacks from the right and the pull from the left and do what is right for America. The moment passed very quickly and the thought did not just fade, it was shattered, shredded.

agida
Italian-American slang for heartburn but it can also mean mental aggravation.

**
Today those of us who live paycheck-to-paycheck are watching as powerful people who have absolutely no accountability to us make decisions that will determine our economic futures. We all have a bad case of economic agida. Heartburn caused by the fear of an impending fiscal crisis that will cripple the economy and have us all buying lots of guns and moving to Montana.

Well, the 2008 Republican National Convention is over. We say very often that something was "history in the making." Most things we can't be sure about until there is a distance of years and events stand the test of time. But there is no doubt that we saw history in Minneapolis. First, we had Gustav. Hurricane Gustav that is. Gustav's name is etched in the history books now for eliminating a full day of the Republican National convention. Suspending the convention was the right thing to do. While not Katrina, Gustav has caused major damage in the Gulf Coast region.

Hate to say I told you so. Sarah Palin has arrived. Her speech was not a homerun. It was a Grand Slam.

Lost my internet connection for most of the day. No video for the blog and now I'm out of time. Need to get on the bus to the Convention.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's blog. Lots of video and final commentary about the convention.

Praying for the Gulf Coast

Today I left for Minneapolis. I had prepared a blog about a metaphor involving First Class and Coach, but events in the Gulf of Mexico have forced us all to reevaluate.

When I was a kid there was some sort of referendum on whether New Jersey should be split into two states: North Jersey and South Jersey. Of course, we in Cape May County voted overwhelmingly to split.
