DENNISVILLE — Students from Greta Liston’s first grade class at Dennis Township Primary School have been working diligently throughout February on a special gift for U.S. troops overseas. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, the students made special cards Wed., Feb. 1 to express their gratitude and appreciation for service men and women stationed throughout the world.
“It will be a very nice present for the soldiers and they would enjoy it,” said 6-year-old Kayla. Kayla’s father just returned from Afghanistan after a year of service.
“I think they would say that they appreciate it,” said Olivia, 6.
The students, who were asked to list adjectives that described the troops, said that they were, among other things: brave, courageous, awesome, and selfless.
The cards are part of a school-wide community service project entitled “Caring Kids.” The goal of the project is to “develop compassion and inspire a spirit of volunteering in our children.”
“They protect us and we are so happy that we want to make them happy,” exclaimed Bobby, 6, who thoroughly enjoyed making his valentine.
Approximately 175 cards have been made and will be sent to the troops in time for Valentine’s Day by a local radio station.
