COURT HOUSE - Coming on the heels of the resignation of the Ocean City Democratic Municipal leader who announced he was leaving his post in protest to highlight his disappointment with Democratic State Senator Jeff Van Drew, a new rift has developed in the Democratic ranks.
Middle Township Democratic candidate Sam Kelly has called Van Drew out for interjecting himself into a local zoning flap in Middle Township. After Township officials informed a diner owner that his streamers with replica American flags were disallowed, the owner reported that he had spoken to Van Drew who told him he could put the streamers back up.
Kelly posted the following comment on the Cape May County Herald website: “Mr Van Drew probably did exceed his authority, that would be a legal issue. Mr Van Drew was absolutely disrespectful to the township officials. Politics as usual. Sam Kelly.”
“The Cape May County Democratic Party may be on the cusp of experiencing a revolution similar to what took place within our Republican Party in 2010,” said Cape May County Republican Chairman Mike Donohue. “For years Van Drew has made the Cape May County Democratic Organization about nothing but himself. Now, rank and file Democrats are clearly fed up with the All-Jeff-All-The-Time approach of Van Drew. An ambitious politician can only demand control over people for so long before those people want their voice back. It looks like Van Drew’s popularity is shrinking even within his own Democratic Party ranks.”
