SEA ISLE CITY — On Feb. 8, Sea Isle City Mayor Leonard Desiderio and Sea Isle’s five city council members honored a local Cub Scout in recognition of her support of the scout’s 2011 Cookie Campaign.
Rebecca Bretzke, 8, a third-grader at the Sea Isle City Public School, was joined by her parents and younger brother when she stepped forward to receive a special plaque from the mayor, which proclaimed her Sea Isle City’s “Junior Citizen of the Year.”
A Brownie for more than three years, Rebecca first stepped into the spotlight in December when it was announced that her image was chosen to appear on billboards and other print advertisements as part of the scout’s state-wide advertising campaign. Since then, her smiling face has been seen on train platforms and next to highways across New Jersey.
“We are very proud that Rebecca is the face of the Girl Scout’s cookie campaign this year!” said Desiderio. “I bet we will see her again in other advertisements in the future,” he added.
After Rebecca received her award from the mayor, he then presented her with another plaque from the County Freeholders, of which Desiderio is a member.
That honor also recognized and congratulated her for appearing in the advertising campaign.
Afterwards, Rebecca, a member of Brownie Troop No. 42983, stated that she was very happy and that she was looking forward to hanging the awards on her bedroom wall.
“We have already sold a lot of cookies,” she said with both thumbs in the air. “And we are going to sell even more this year!”
