CAPE MAY – Author John Bailey will be greeting members of the public and signing copies of his books at the Carriage House Gallery Shop at the Emlen Physick Estate on Sun., Oct. 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Bailey is the author of two books published in 2011, "Cape Island, The Jewel of the Jersey Shore" and "Juet’s Journal, A Translation."
"Cape Island, The Jewel of the Jersey Shore" is a comprehensive, chronological history of Cape May. “It brings the people of the town to life and tells the stories of those Cape Islanders, who, through the ages, created the charming seaside village that we find today at the southernmost tip of New Jersey,” according to the author.
"Juet’s Journal, A Translation" is an exciting venture back in time to the days of Cape May’s origins. In the summer of 1609, Henry Hudson and his crew on board their tiny ship, the Half Moon, ran aground and anchored near the tip of Cape May. In Juet’s Journal, A Translation, Bailey has translated the journal of Robert Juet, Hudson’s clerk, who kept a detailed log of the ship’s travels. Bailey’s translations ran as a popular serial in 2009 in the local weekly newspaper, the Cape May Star and Wave, and are now available in book form.
Bailey lives in Cape May, N.J. and has had a career as a computer technical writer and business owner. He is a Navy veteran and past president of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities and was twice elected to Cape May City Council. He and his wife Nancy are master leather craftsmen who operated the Baileywicke Leather Shop on Washington Street in Cape May for 30 years.
The Carriage House Gallery Shop is located at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., Cape May. "Cape Island, The Jewel of the Jersey Shore," and "Juet’s Journal, A Translation," are both available for purchase at the shop.
