A follow-up project to last years “I’M THAT GUY” anti drunk-driving presentations is underway by the South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance. While awaiting sentencing, 25 year old Matthew Maher, a professional soccer player from Cape May County traveled to numerous high schools and colleges in Southern new Jersey to share his tragic story about his involvement in a fatal crash on the Atlantic City Expressway that was a result of his operating his vehicle while intoxicated.

Maher spoke to nearly 8,000 students in the southern New Jersey area making 34 appearances in high schools and colleges. The Alliance is attempting to keep the safety message going, and is producing a documentary short subject film updating events since Maher was sent to the Mid-State Correctional Facility, to serve his 5 and a half year sentence.

Teresa Thomas, SJTSA Program Manager said “When I learned that Matt’s website was getting between 200 and 300 hits a day I knew that his story was still relevant and that we needed to change up the video so we could take it back into the schools this year.”

John and Andrea Maher, Matt’s parents, along with his older brother Anthony, were all interviewed as part of the project. The Alliance also traveled to the Mid-State Correctional Facility to interview Matt in jail.

Thomas said “The shock value of this project will come from Matt from jail and his comments about jail. They are very sobering and hopefully they will be a real deterrent for the teens.”

I love how he is being praised as some kinda hero.In the videos he stands up there and talks about how great he was?Seriously I wouldnt wanna use someone who received 5 years which will turn out to be 3 1/2 years in jail as my poster child for THAT GUY!!!!When most people who get convicted of the samething do way more time??

Wed, 09/15/2010 - 1:44pm - Posted by: fromthevillasscum

Was your son asked to partner with the SJTSA to tell his story? Did he receive preferential treatment in jail? Was he required to do his time without field trips? Did your family use the personal tragedy to glorify your son?And out partying and starting fights while waiting for trial?I guess the judge didnt hear about that huh?Or maybe it wouldnt of mattered cause thats right his father was a cop.I love cops.If it wasnt for cops we wouldnt have a safe society to live in.But I am totally against anyone getting special treatment cause your daddy was a cop?Anyway he is online whining about having to wear paper panties in jail and 1.75 toilet paper.Sorry you dont have scotty puff so soft in State Prison pal but you deserve waay worse.Like maybe 7 1/2 yearsLight sentence cause he made a couple speeches?Yeah he's got a picture of himself on facebook holding his head like oh my time is soo hard..If anything he shoulda got the max to make it really come off as bad for kids. But you tell a kid yeah I did 3 1/2 years for murder isnt harsh enough....thx.....

No parent should ever have to bury a child. That was a tragic loss that no one should have to endure. It's wrong to even go there.

Don't even go there Partdeux. Mr. Maher is a great man, who has done a lot of good things for this community. He and his family do not deserve your blind ignorant hatred for law enforcement.

I agree with Grandjury; all of you are so focus on what the bad cops do, that you're completely against any and all cops. We have some really good cops down here and you all treat them like trash.

Don't let one bad apple spoil the rest of the group for you.

I am glad Matt is making a new video and I can guarantee it will have an impact on many kids.Hopefully, when your kids come home to tell you (as parents) about the video, listen to them. When I drive by bars, there are many adults drinking and the parking lots. are full. Some of you responding to this blog appear to hate all police officers and some of you are angry at the Maher family. The truth is, there are plenty of good police officers out there in our county, but, there is also a couple of bad apples and we can not allow them to destroy the reputation of the good that far outway the bad.

Stop kicking the Maher family when there down, do what's right and wish them well. I myself am a little disappointed that Mrs. Maher doesn't cover stories of the prosecutors persecution of Cape May residents in the Herald, but I stand behind her when it comes to wishing the best for her, her family and the future lives this video may save.

If not for daddy he would be serving the full sentence that goes along with this crime. I for one don't give a crap about his stupid video or blog. It is like saying feel sorry for me. Well doesn't anyone feel sorry for the person he killed or the family he destroyed. Hey daddy I bet your proud, one son overdoses and the other kills an innocent person (and I bet a christian at that) How many more families is your family going to destroy? So tired of people saying you don't know the family, well I think everyone does with Daddy's ties to the county. I find it appalling that daddy embarrasses the sheriff's department by allowing his face on the That Guy video. If that was one of his employees I bet things would be frowned upon and discipline handed down. Let's see how long this comment stays up before Mommy removes it. What ever happened to freedom of speech?

Get a grip people, There are a lot of inmates locked up for the same crime, doing double the time, in a real prison, not in protected custody. I'm sure they are sorry for their crime also. I'm sure most have also found God. I'm sure they have nice families also. I'm sure some come from Christian families. So that being said, why is this Maher guy so special? Why is he receiving special treatment? Why because of his parents jobs. And with this type of publicity it show the public their true colors. This is nothing more than grand standing, and idolizing a person who took a life recklessly. This article and the whole situation is offensive.

You people don't even know him or his family. Yet you are so quick to judge them just because of their careers. You people are unbelievable; nothing the Police, Courts, EMS, and Firefigthers do can make you guys happy.

Maher is Just another D-bag trying anything to get his already watered down sentence to nothing.

Daddy is a policeman, special treatment. Poor family who lost their loved one.

Nice to see the good people of Cape May County are at it again--sitting around their computers---thumbing their noses at a family like the Mahers who are trying to make a positive impact on our society and kids. Some of you need to spend a little time in the real world----a big city----so you will realize that no one really cares about these small-town jealousy-drenched lies (with a side of bitterness!). In pretty much every other city/county EXCEPT for Cape May County---people DO NOT CARE. Each person does their own thing and when someone does something worthwhile---as it seems is the case with the Maher boy--- others would typically cheer him/her on for their stab at improving society at large. If you happened to have moved from this county 20 years ago or 20 days ago~~~ rest assured: nothing has changed. Still a bunch of cynical, angry haters second-guessing every well-intentioned step in the right direction. Just because you're happy with your mediocrity doesn't mean the rest of the human race should sit back and watch the world go on by. An opportunity to save lives somehow ends up in a discussion about MTV and BRAVO? Please. Only in this County. if this is true that the victim's family supports the effort than the rest of you should mind your own business, let this kid try to make a difference (while in prison) and let the victim rest in peace. Back to the real world I go...

Big 63,

You are obviously a good friend to Matt and it's good to see that you are sticking by him during a very difficult time in his life. The Maher family has a history of dealing with life's hardships. They are a very Christian family and I firmly believe that GOD test those that have the strongest faith, and I hope that this hardship will lead to healing for the victims family and the Maher family. Mrs. Maher, others have also suffered and it's time they receive the same attention your son has received. Step up and speak for those that are less fortunate then Matt, at least he receives press for his good deeds. If I want to publish an article regarding the hostage Doctor George Carty who has spent almost 3 years in jail in order for prosecutor Taylor to be re-elected I have to pay to publish that article. Mrs. Maher, your husband is aware that Cape May County is holding a hostage and you probably know also. It's time that you and your husband shed the light on prosecutor Taylor. As long as you ignore doctor Carty's suffering and are unwilling to write about it, then how can you expect GOD to answer your prayers? Who do you truly answer too, GOD or prosecutor Taylor?

No BIGE63 the term muscleheads was not a compliment.you're trying to twist it around because you were probably with him in the bars all that time while he was awaitng trial.Just because you have a job and pay taxes like most of us do,doesn't make you exempt from being an A**hole. The absolute minimum term for Matt's crime was supposed to be 10yrs with NERA 85% time served before his parole eligibility. But because of who he knows and who he's related to he got less time. Not because of loopholes in the law or any other reason!

It would not shock me the least if the Maher family tried to market this presentation to The Discovery Channel, Bravo or MTV. For profit of course! When he gets out of the slammer, Matt might have a nice little nest egg!

Matt is a close friend of mine, as we graduated from college together. He not only introduced me to his brothers in which i remain close with, but also his parents and family. Not many people are in the same situation Matt is in right now, so to judge without that same experience shows a flaw in your character. Spreading his message may not reach all 8000 people the same, but all it takes is for 1 person to really hear it, and that can save a life. Hort Kap lost his life and not a day goes by that Matt doesnt wish that it was the other way around. Each county and state, on many levels, have all types of punishments and timelines in place for every scenario, so with Matt getting 5 1/2 is to that other lady getting 15, thats the judicial system, Dont blame the Maher family or any other family that knows the law and how it reads. And if by muscle heads you mean all the college graduates that Matt hangs out with, that have jobs, pay taxes, and contribute to the well being of our nation, ill take that as a compliment. I wish the Maher and Kap family the best on the tough road ahead, and know that for the Kap family to forgive Matt and his family, showed compassion. Matt did take a life, but he will, for as long as he lives, honor the memory and life of Hort Kap

I met Matt some time ago and he was a very friendly person. Unfortunately, the unthinkable happened and a person lost there life. I am glad he is trying to make a possitive impression on kids and hopefully it will save lives. On the other hand, Matt has not spent a great deal of time in prison as of this date. His mother is a nice person and a Christian who writes uplifting stories for the Herald and who can blame her for wanting whats best for her child. My question for you Mrs Maher where have you been during Doctor Caty's approximately 3 years of incarcerration? George has not been found guilty of any crimes, and you have had the opportunity to speak on behalf of in-justice, but you have not. Speak out on behalf of Doctor Carty first, and show the people of Cape May County that your situation is not a back door hook-up between your husband and Robert Taylor; then we can address Matt's situation. That would be the Christian way and put an end to the hostage crisis in Cape May. www.urnotabovethelaw.us

Scorpion. I do believe we are talking about the SJTSA....not the SJTA that you posted a link for in your comment---

The video is nothing but a disgrace they should be ashamed to show it .75%of the video is showing him .Hes not a hero and whoever made the video is an A**hole!!!!!!!

Thu, 09/09/2010 - 3:12pm - Posted by: letsbehonest

let's see.Paula C. is 61 clean record, blows .8 in the breathelizer, gets 15 yrs for hitting a pedestrian. It could have been a mistake of looking away from the road at the wrong time.butshe did fail the test,so she gets what her crime calls for.hope fully she won't win her retrial.Maher hits another vehicle doing 110mph blows 3 times the legal limit and gets 5yrs,and trying to get out early. Maher and his musclehead friends were out at the bars the whole time he was awaiting trial, getting drunk and trying to start fights. He is a disgrace to this community.he should have gotten at least 15yrs,then be made to talk to youths about drunk driving, but because of who he knows he gets below the minimum sentence in a cushy prison for cops and politicians. What the h**** is wrong with our judicial system. They need to quit showing favoritism to people like this!!!!!

Thu, 09/09/2010 - 9:47am - Posted by: rio grande

What i dont understand is why is he any differant than anybody else.If you read the press there is an older lady in there and she got 15yrs for the same thing. Also the kid Golden from Philadelphia smoking pot and driving killing someone and they want to give him the max 20yrs.. Knowing he would never survive in prison.Maybe he should go to Mid-State too.It really is all about who you know!!! killed someone drinking and driving I probably couldnt forgive myself and WOULDNT EVER DRINK AGAIN!!!!

If just one out of 8,000 listen, and one life is saved don't you think it's worth it? That life could be any one of ours...

khl, Let me first say I am sorry for the pain you have had to endure due to the personal tragedy. But I have to ask, was your son asked to partner with the SJTSA to tell his story? Did he receive preferential treatment in jail? Was he required to do his time without field trips? Did your family use the personal tragedy to glorify your son? mellowyellow, Matt isn't the pied piper with some magical power over the youth in the county. People don't learn from other people's mistakes. Shock may have some small short term effect but it eventually wears off. I highly doubt that 8,000 young people in the county would never consider driving after drinking just because Matt Maher spoke to them about his personal experience. He isn't a messiah. Every time I see a story about THAT GUY in the newspaper it makes me sick. I would have more respect for the family if Matt did his time, came out saying his life had been changed and THEN started doing his good deeds to show the world he is true to his word. Until then, I think it's all a dog and pony show.

Facts are, the average sentence for this crime is 10 years, he got 5, facts are he's looking for field trips and wants to get out in 3yrs. Daddy knows the ins and outs of the system and this is just publicity for an early release. Bad decision, yes, but he is no better than anyone else that has made that same bad decision. I bet there's a lot of guys in prison for the same crime that would like the same sentence, special treatment, and glorification. With all this publicity the only thing it's teaching these kids how to become famous. A trooper killed 2 girls in an accident, everyone wanted his head on a platter, Maher kills someone and he's to be whorshiped. I guess it's who you know????

Dear Scorpion and mscrabtree...two years ago two of my children went to Atlantic City for a night out with two of their friends...all had too much to drink that evening...my daughter asked her brother to drive her car home that evening because she thought her brother looked alright to drive home...unfortunately he was not, he fell asleep at the wheel and his friend was killed and my daughter almost died...till the day I leave this earth, I will never think of my son as a murderer or a killer. They all made a horable decision that morning, that is forever going to pain our hearts. I hope you don't think of our family as a disgrace .

Wed, 09/08/2010 - 4:53pm - Posted by: mellowyellow

and once again the reason our society continues to spiral downward. people like scorpion and mscrabtree who miss the point entirely. facts are... kids listen to this guy. the victim's family is supportive and has even written blogs on the website. the victims oldest son hugged this guy and forgave him during sentencing (it was on news and video on that site), matt is serving his time.....----you both are showing more dishonor to the victim by scoffing at the Kap family's desire to use their father's death to prevent future tragedies. get the whole story before you start running your mouths off....RIP HORT KAP-----forever loved and missed <3

Matt continues to be glorified while most people don't remember the name of the decedent. How many drunk drivers from South Jersey have been afforded the same opportunities for stardom after someone was killed because of their bad choices? He is well connected and an example of a privileged upbringing. The SJTSA is a farce. And yes, the Maher family should be ashamed for continually putting this murderer in the spotlight as some sort of hero.

Wed, 09/08/2010 - 3:26pm - Posted by: shelly45

What is the problem with this? They are shooting an interview to prevent drinking and driving? I see a positive thing coming from this tragedy. The victim's family is supportive of the efforts so why should be so incallous and hateful? Yes, Matt did a very terrible thing and is being punished for it. Yes deserves every second in jail because what he did was terrible. However, lets's keep and open mind and try to prevent our children from being victims as well.

The Maher family is a Christin, God loving family. Always have been. Always will be. They are the perfect example of doing everything parents should do and still the circumstances of life can still deal you hard blows and everybody makes mistakes. Their son is in prison, paying for his crime no matter where he is. He is still denied the freedom to do what he wants. He is filling his time constructively and helping others. He will always have this terrible tragedy to deal with in everything he does. I know the Maher family and could be considered an acquaintance. I am not a family member singing their accolades. I have, however, been in their home, Mr. Maher has coached my son, Mr. Maher has almost locked my son up in his capacity in Lower Township. So, you cannot say I am just a friend singing their praises. I am just saying that he who is without sin can cast the first stone.

I agree he did the crime and should pay for taking someones life. His experiences in jail first he was sent to mid state. Why hes not a cop lawyer or doctor or someone in that catagory !He should have been sent to a real prison then maybe he would have something to talk about.Whats he going to say they kisss my A** here.
