NORTH WILDWOOD-- A child was injured on Fri., July 2, while suffering a medical problem on the Zoom Flume ride on Morey's Pier which resulted in an emergency helicopter transport to the pediatric trauma unit at Cooper Universitly Hospital in Camden.

Morey's Pier Director of Risk Management Geoff Rogers released a statement on July 3, that "staff contacted Wildwoods EMS to assist a guest who was having a personal medical issue on the Zoom Phloom attraction."

Use of a medevac helicopter was not mentioned in the statement. Rogers would not comment further on the incident.

North Wildwood police refused to release information on the incident following repeated request by several news agencies.

The Herald filed an Open Public Records Request on July 6 and obtained reports from both the police and fire departments.

According to the reports, Morey's Pier EMT John Devine, reported to police the child whose name is blacked out in the reports "is believed to have had a seizure and struck his head while ridding in one of the cars used on the ride."

A woman who identified herself as a nurse told police the child was "unresponsive and presumably unconscious" when she arrived to assist," according to the report.

North Wildwood fire department requested a medevac helicopter to respond.

The medevac's dispatch reported the incident as a "amusement ride accident."

The flight crew en-route to the trauma center reported the patient to be a 10 year-old special needs child in stable condition. The child was reported to have a possible head injury sustained on a "log flume ride."

Lisa Ryan a spokesperson for the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, the agency which regulates the amusement parks said in a statement "Division of Codes and Standards is currently investigating the incident. The ride was closed for the remainder of the night. The Division inspected it Saturday and reopened the ride."

According to the police report the child was released from the hospital later that night.

Why did it take seven days for the Herald to report this story

Mon, 07/12/2010 - 12:22am - Posted by: Privatepile

I think the title was correct the kid got hurt while on the ride. They didn't say the ride caused it. My son was injured on this same ride. He got scarred when he saw the drop and tucked his head down. When we hit the watter he banged his face on the car he had a bloody lip and nose. HE GOT HURT ON THE RIDE. Did the ride cause the injury?? NO of coarse not. You all need to learn how to read. How else should they have worded it ? People would have been suspicious. I think you should give the newspaper credit for going through all the trouble to clear the name of Morey's even after according to the article Morey's was uncooperative. I personally would not have done it because now this guy is going to be harassed by the egotistical NWW PD.

Exactly, that is my beef with this article....if you just read the headline, which many of us do, it implies that the ride hurt the kid. When in fact, the kid had a seizure while he happened to be riding an amusement ride and that was just a matter of chance. If the kid had a seizure at Sam's Pizza would the headline have been "Child injured at Sam's Pizza"???? No way. Wouldn't have made page 49. But when you throw an amusement ride into the mix, you get attention. Hence irresponsible reporting. In the end, WHY IS THIS EVEN NEWSWORTHY???? People have seisures all of the time, every day, and why is this particular event even published?

Ok this will be the last post I make on this as far as employees of Moreys, They take pride in the fack that they run a FUN AND SAFE PARK and when The Herald posted with ( Child Hurt On Log Flume) It sounded like a dig on the safity at the park in which the Maintenance Dept takes very personal for the fact that, that Dept makes all the rides safe. How one words something can make the differance THATS ALL. I am a former Mechanic their and know first hand. and I did say former. I also see that some who write comments have alot of hate. It is not needed .

Did you just compare a rapist to the log flume?

The Herald has no choice but to report from what they hear on a scanner. I said it a million times and I will say it again..NORTH WILDWOOD RELEASES NO INFORMATION ON ANYTHING BUT PARADES & CONCERTS. They are not concerned with public safety as much as they are concerned with public image. You Morey employees coming here to criticize the Herald are no better. You are so concerned over a little negative press that might hurt your bottom line. Maybe reporting this will enlighten other parents of special needs children. I am curious as to why a maintenance man would feel it necessary to release "personal and confidential" medical information on this child in defense of Morey Organization. Thank you, Herald. Keep up the good work. You helped take a rapist off the streets by reporting what you heard from a scanner.

I have to defend the Herald Staff here. They do the best they can with the resources that they have. Maybe if a few tricksters like "unbannable" weren't spewing verbal diarrhea in the comment section then the staff would have more time for updates. That son of a gun made some awful comments before he was deleted. I was particularly upset when I read a comment he posted in the spout-off in which he stated that all African Americans stink and two criminals were going to make JerseySoldier perform oral sex on them but he would like it because he is in the Army. Kudos to the staff for banning someone as uncouth as him while still maintaining a high standard of reporting.

PeqGuy the herald don't need to censor. North Wildwood will do it for them. Good thing they refused to be stonewalled and gave us an update. I bet the cops are steaming they got called out lol

Let's be fair! If the Herald didn't post the article at all, they'd be accused of censoring the new to benefit the Morey's.

Thank you for your efforts, Herald staff! I look forward to the update.

Should have never reported anything then! Especially based on what you hear from a scanner. I am sure if you did some investigating, you will get the story correct. Enough said...Alot of time and energy goes into making these rides some of the safest in the WORLD and reading unresearched articles like this makes me upset!

Sun, 07/04/2010 - 6:42pm - Posted by: TheHammer

Are you kidding me? So the Hearld publishes articles based on what is overheard on a police scanner? Are you serious, this is what you report from and publish on the web for the entire world to read? At least the Press of AC got some facts straight... Did the Herald not get the Morey's statement? Why hasn't the Herald article been updated to reflect this?

Sun, 07/04/2010 - 2:38pm - Posted by: cryptaknight

Yes I agree with the writer tdenke he said it like it is and is right the park is # 1 in safity and are very cereful about all they do I have been around the world and can say they are among the best in making sure that all are safe on all the rides. I used to work their and know first hand. Hi (T) I miss you guys and will be stoping in to see ya all soon....purple man J............... PS tell Ed I miss all the fun we had LOL

That is my favorite ride. If it is true that this child was hurt do to seizures, I fully agree bad reporting. Grabbed my attention, but if I was a parent/shoobie I would have a real bad feeling about Morey's rides right now. In this case the ride is not at fault!

Sat, 07/03/2010 - 8:48pm - Posted by: tdenke

This is some very bad reporting!!! I am the maintenance supervisor for this ride and this story is far from the truth! The child has a history of siezures and had one while going down the second drop of the ride. There was no accident and ride was running at full operation. The "head injury" was a bump on the back of his head from falling down into the boat. He was rushed to the hospital because of the seizure! This is what I hate about the media, always rushing to print an article without getting all the facts first. I usually am a big fan of this paper but not today!!

Ya (onlinereader) you should just keep your retarded thoughts to yourself alot of people here don't want your kind of comments....No one needs your crude selfless comments

Special Needs does not necessarily mean he was "retarded" as you call it. He/she could have other types of special needs. Be courteous and think how you would feel if it was your child.l
