Middle Township Begins Employee Health Program

COURT HOUSE - Middle Township has initiated a brand new employee health and wellness program designed to improve the overall health and fitness levels of Township employees. The Township has formed a volunteer committee consisting of employees who will help identify the interests and motivations of employees while discussing essential program components. Mayor Tim Donohue said the Middle Township Employee Health and Wellness Program is just one part of a holistic approach to employee relations being implemented by Township Administration.

"In these tough economic times, it can be hard for our employees to envision a brighter future with opportunities for advancement and greater earning power," Mayor Tim Donohue said. "We are committed to providing our staff a clear path, with attainable goals, that will allow them to enhance their value to the taxpayers. For many, these opportunities have been few and far between in the past. Through organization memberships, seminars and classes, our employees can grow in their positions while raising the level of services we provide to our residents at the same time. This health and wellness program is a natural extension of our efforts to build better government and improve employee morale."

A new Middle Township Wellness Planning and Steering Committee has been formed consisting of Township employees who are interested in implementing this program for their peers. The committee will be meeting monthly at Township Hall to assess a variety of nutrition and physical activity program components that will be available to all employees.

The Centers for Disease Control reports that chronic diseases account for 75 percent of total healthcare costs; they are also the most preventable types of disease. These illnesses include heart disease, stroke, cancer, and obesity. When a person is able to commit mentally, emotionally, and socially to a wellness program, progress in overall health is possible.

“Our end goal is happier, and healthier employees”, Donohue said. There is a remarkable and significant benefit to not only the employees directly, but to the Middle Township taxpayer through reduced healthcare costs, fewer sick days, enhanced employee productivity, and a reduced risk of workplace injury. We are currently partnering with local businesses for possible discounts on healthy living options and fitness memberships”.

Some of the programs that Township has currently in place or will implement in 2014 include team building activities; employee of the month/employee of the year recognition; employee exercise room, Township department spotlights/surveys/questionnaires; and a fruit and vegetable wellness van at no cost to taxpayers.
