COURT HOUSE — Sam Kelly, Democratic candidate for Middle Township Committee, last week resigned from the race citing “personal reasons.”
According to Kelly’s attorney, Stephen Barry, “He had some personal issues and couldn’t commit to campaigning.”
Kelly had accepted the nomination following the June primary election in which he received 16 write-in votes. That was sufficient for him to take the party’s nod to run.
The Middle Township Democratic Committee members elected William “Bill” Sturm, 45, of Rio Grande, to fill the vacancy at its Mon., Aug. 8 meeting.
Sturm, a life-long township resident, is a foreman with the Wildwood Water Utility. His late father, William E. Sturm Jr. was a long-time freeholder and director of the board.
"Under the extraordinary circumstances we are very fortunate to wind up with a candidate such as Bill Sturm," said Kelly.
“Middle Township is a stable, well-governed community. It doesn’t present any problems,” said Barry. “This election is really an attempt for a political takeover for political patronage jobs.”
