AVALON - The Avalon Borough Council approved a resolution during its meeting on Wed., Feb. 8, 2012 to support a measure endorsed by the Avalon Board of Education that will move school elections to November in the Borough of Avalon. The vote by the Avalon Borough Council was unanimous, 5-0.
“I applaud the leadership of the Avalon Board of Education for moving the school elections from April to November”, said Avalon Borough Council President Dr. Nancy Hudanich. “Dispensing with the annual school budget votes in the spring will not only save taxpayers’ dollars but also generate more interest and involvement in local school elections”.
The Avalon Board of Education approved the resolution to eliminate the vote on the annual school budget and move the election of school board members to the general election in November. That move takes effect in November, 2012 and shall remain in effect for a minimum of four years.
It is anticipated that the move of the school elections to November will greatly increase participation in school elections in the Borough of Avalon. In the 2011 Avalon school election, 135 out of a possible 1,348 registered voters participated in the election.
In the past it cost between $4,000 and $5,000 to hold an April school election in the Borough of Avalon.
