Big noise! Big roostertails! Don’t miss them! The biggest and the baddest of hydroplanes will light up the bay waters in Wildwood Crest on October 12 and 13. The Grand Prix class, the most exciting hydroplane class on the powerboat racing circuit of the American Power Boat Association, runs big block super-charged motors, boasting 1500 hp.
The Grand Prix will join 10 other classes of race boats at the Wildwoods Hydrofest to compete for the coveted New Jersey Governor’s Cup. The event is the last stop on the APBA’s race boat circuit and the last chance to earn points for national high points.
Ann Fitzgerald, who coordinates the Hydrofest for the host community, Wildwood Crest, stated that 65 to70 race teams are expected. Fitzgerald is particularly excited that the Grand Prix hydroplanes will be back again this year. In addition to all the racing classes, an Unlimited Hydroplane will be on display in the Marketplace—a 30 ft. hydroplane with a turbine engine pushing 3,000 hp!
Wildwoods Hydrofest is FREE to Wildwood’s visitors; visitors should plan on a full day from 9 am to 4 pm. Pit passes are available at the main gate of the pit area if race fans want to get closer to the drivers and boats.
In addition to racing, there is a Marketplace with food, merchandise, and craft vendors as well as displays and entertainment.
After the races, there is much to enjoy in the Wildwoods! Great restaurants, the Boardwalk and Piers, or a relaxing walk on the beautiful beaches. Out-of-town visitors can come for the weekend and take advantage of the post-seasonal motel rates!
