RIO GRANDE -- A 42-year-old woman was struck and killed as she crossed the southbound lanes of Route 47 near Sixth Street at approximately 6 p.m. Wed., Feb. 1.

According to Capt. John Edwards of the Middle Township Police, the woman, identified as 42-year-old Nancy Camp, had left ShopRite and was wearing dark clothing. A Chevrolet Blazer, driven by Rocco Cocchiola, 77, of Goshen, was headed southbound on Route 47 and struck Camp as she crossed highway. The driver was abiding by the speed limit and was not impaired.

Camp was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical examiner.

This was the second fatality in that general vicinity in recent history. The area is dark, and is not a marked pedestrian crossing.

Police from Middle Township, Wildwood and the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office responded to the scene, as well as Rio Grande Fire Department, Medic 9, Middle Township Emergency Medical Services and Air 3, which was recalled.

OK. So everyone has stated what they see as being the obvious. Yes, we can take from the information that the area was dark. Yes, we also read that she was wearing dark clothes. Yes, Nancy was not crossing in the cross walk. Should she have crossed at the cross walk, Yes. Did she? From the article, No. Is the driver who hit Nancy, devistated? Yes, very much from what we read. Does her friends and family feel terrible for the driver? Definately, Yes. Ok. All that said, Nancy was a very good friend of mine. I have known her for over 30 years. I will miss her very much. It just hurts her friends and family to read how insensitive some people can be. You kidding me, someone was wondering what she had bought from Shop Rite? How immature! Nancy has three children that I am sure will read this article and comments. Is this how you want them to know how you show your respect? They know right from wrong. They know that their mother should of crossed at the crosswalk. That does not make them love her any less. I feel sorry for anyone who posted these insensative comments. May God look after you and your family and friends and may you never make a mistake. If you do I hope that nobody makes statements that might hurt your friends and families feelings. Especially if it is a tragic loss. RIP Nancy and may God Bless all of you.

again feel bad but you can't be upset if the comments are true..people are not trying to be insensitive just stating the obvious

I find some of the comments here absolutely staggering. A woman lost her life. To make such insensitive comments is a sad reflection on how life and respect of life has become so low in today’s society.

I'm sorry, but it IS about how it happened and how a life was needlessly lost because of bad decision making. My condolences to her family and my empathy to the driver. He is a victim of this tragedy, as well. Does it really matter how well or dimly lit the area was? There is NO pedestrian crossing in that area of the highway. People shouldn't be crossing there and drivers shouldn't be expected to anticipate pedestrian traffic crossing a highway. The focus is on traffic making a left turn for the parkway entrance and then traffic merging from the parkway exit ramp on the right, not people in dark clothing crossing a highway where there is NO crossing. What happened to common sense?

I feel bad for Nancy I do. I tried to post that when I learned who it was. you are right its not about how this happened its about a life lost.

A life was lost. Some of you should be ashamed of yourself for being so self absorbed that you can only think about how she should have done this or should have done that. Is that what you would want people to say to you if it had been your daughter? Don't think for a moment that her and her family will not be eventually reading these comments. What has happened is tragic and you should be more respectful.

marmoracat - Excellent suggestion, but I'd doubt it would go anywhere - afterall, look at the crossings on the Parkway. Maybe sometype of guard rail or 3 foot fence - might be faster and cheaper. But - great suggestion anyway.

capemayal@gmail.com- Sorry, I believed the accident was at the crosswalk. I agree with you 100%, the pedestrian was jaywalking, and the driver of the Blazer was not at fault. Perhaps a overhead pedestrian bridge would be a useful solution over route 47 if that many people cross the road. Maybe instead of Middle Township using money to install red light cameras they can put the money towards pedestrian safety before it becomes an issue like it has on the Black Horse Pike in EHT. Safety wise, a overhead pedestrian crosswalk eliminates the chance of them getting hit. Red light cameras only deter people who run redlights.

Wonder what she was getting from the shop-rite?

Please stop. Ok, does it really matter where or how it happened? My point is, Nancy was a very dear friend, she will be missed very much by her family (including 3 children) and many friends. It does not matter if she was right or wrong. Nancy is no longer with us. I feel bad for the man who hit her. I can't even imagine how he feels. Everyone please take all this energy you are using on this post and use it for the family of Nancy and the man who hit her. I miss you Nancy. RIP. Thank You

marmoracat - FYI - the accident wasn't at the stoplight crosswalk - it was east of that, where a street comes into Rt 47 from the motel side, but there is no crosswalk coming from the ShopRite to the motel.

I passed the scene shortly after the emergency equipment arrived, and that's where it was.

At first I thought it was a shooting with all the yellow numbered markers layed out.

Thu, 02/02/2012 - 4:48pm - Posted by: capemayal@gmail.com

Yasmin Lajara - Were you not reading the article correctly? 1) The person was crossing Rt 47 - not in the crosswalk, but down by the motel. 2) The person was wearing dark clothing. 3) I doubt that you could have seen this person either - dark clothing, dark street ? 4) Just because the vehicle was a Blazer, doesn't mean the headlights aren't aimed correctly. You're just assuming since it's a big vehicle that the headlights are too high, therefore aimed higher. All vehicle's headlights are adjusted to properly illuminate the area ahead - even tractor/trailers.

Obviously you've never driven anything other than your feet..

I feel sorry for the victim's family, and the driver.

The victim was wrong - J-walking. That's why there are illuminated crosswalks.

If I remember right - the motor vehicle regs state that pediatrians have the right of way IN CROSSWALKS and parking lots. I may be wrong on that, but I doubt it.

But, that doesn't mean it's okay to hit someone who's not in a crosswalk - it just means that, perhaps, the pedistrian is breaking the law. I'm not saying the driver in this case is wrong, it just wasn't his fault.

I'm sure if the victim could have been seen, the accident would not have happened.

Come on Yasmin Lajara, get some sense, and try to realize what's obvious.

This is a horrible intersection. It is lit poorly & I have almost hit people there myself. First, the lighting should be improved. Second they have somewhere to pull the darn bus over out of traffic instead of taking up a whole lane and people jockeying to drive around it & people can get on & off the bus safely. Last, they should put up a barrier in the middle so people have to walk to the cross walk. There is alot of pedestrian traffic there & more of this is bound to happen. I almost hit a guy wearing a CAMOFLAGE jacket, why would you wear that at night walking across this street seriously!

Thu, 02/02/2012 - 10:28am - Posted by: villainesta

I think of that possibility a lot driving through RG as the cross walks are far apart and there is frequently someone trying to cross mid-block. I had a car with fog lights that I found gave a widespread area of visibility where needed under these conditions. They should be mandatory.

Thu, 02/02/2012 - 8:39am - Posted by: Doug_C

It does suck that this happened but blaming the driver???Come on I am surprised more people don't get hit trying to cross Rt 47 at that location..Not that many people use the crosswalk maybe this will open others eyes now.

I feel for the victim's friends, their family, and I also feel for the driver. I get shook up when an animal runs out in front of me and I hit it. I can't imagine how this driver must be feeling. My heart goes out to them and everyone involved.

@liveandlaugh215

I was stating in general that people are too lazy to go down to the crosswalk. I'm not talking about this specific accident. I pointed out that a male earlier in the day stepped out into traffic in the same general area only 15ft away from the crosswalk. That's who I'm calling lazy. The whole point of my comment is that people think they can just step out into traffic and expect not to get hit. And please don't say I'm not sympathetic after I just said I was. I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it. This woman has a family I'm sure. I'm not some monster without a heart.

@marmoracat

I was pretty much focusing on the last sentence of the law. The part that says a pedestrian can not step into traffic when it's nearly impossible for a vehicle to yield. I drove by the accident on my way to work and it was down by the off-shore motel and the Japanese resturant where there isn't a traffic light.

Thu, 02/02/2012 - 2:45am - Posted by: marmoracat

First off I'd like to say RIP to the victim and my condolences to the family and friends.

babygirl88- the law you quoted says "except at crosswalks when the movement of traffic is being regulated by police officers or traffic control signals" The traffic is being regulated by a traffic control signal. As long as the driver had a green light, it's the pedestrian's fault. If the light was green, the driver did not have to stop or yield to the pedestrian. This isn't the County's fault as some are already throwing the blame on already. It's Route 47-a STATE highway.

NJ DOT really does not care about its roadways or safety. Look at Route 50 in Seaville. The road is bumpier than some dirt roads I've been down, is crumbling because of it being paved over concrete. Not to mention the traffic signal Upper Township has been trying to get the State DOT to install for YEARS at Hope Corson Rd and Route 50. Not to mention the neglected bridge over the Tuckahoe River which has had to have emergency steel plates installed to cover very large holes in the deck. These are evacuation routes! Hurricane season 2012 is coming...

Not the drivers Fault unless they were on the cell phone, but it says they were doing the speed limit and was not impaired. Torey Spindler, If ya don't know what happened then don't jump to conclusions and learn how to read..and.it ended at the off shore. accidents do happen. She wasn't hit right out front of the off shore. And babygirl188 you say how lazy can you be, bet you wouldn't say that if it was one of your family members. Show some remorse and respect. You say you have sympathy for everyone involved, yet you say "How lazy can you be" lol. Clearly no sympathy...just saying

Nancy, I will miss you terribly. You were a good friend. I will see you again someday.

Wed, 02/01/2012 - 11:03pm - Posted by: babygirl88

She wasn't using the crosswalk point blank. I drive this road everyday and each day someone runs out in front of me or in front of the cars around me. People are too lazy to walk down to the crosswalk. Just today in the same area a man walked out in front of traffic 15 feet from the crosswalk. Really.. 15 feet away?! How lazy can you be?! Just use the crosswalk it could save your life. I have sympathy for everyone involved but people think if they run out in the street, vehicles will see them and stop. Sometimes thats just not the case. I knew it was just a matter of time before this would happen. Does not shock me at all. If it turns out the driver was using their cell phone or distracted in some way then the driver should be held liable. But I will still stand by what I say. People need to use the crosswalks, especially at night. It's safer for everyone.

And for those who think the pedestrian always has the right away, take a minute and read the following. The pedestrian law reads: The driver of a vehicle must STOP and STAY STOPPED for a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any MARKED CROSSWALK, but shall YIELD the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within an UNMARKED CROSSWALK at an INTERSECTION, except at crosswalks when the movement of traffic is being regulated by police officers or traffic control signals, or where otherwise prohibited by municipal, county, or State regulation, and except where a pedestrian tunnel or overhead pedestrian crossing has been provided, BUT no pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield.

I was at the scene 30 minutes to an hour [tops] after the incident happened, and it was right in front of the brightly-lit Off-Shore Motel. It was JUST GETTING DARK when my friend and I happened upon the accident, the driver was COMPLETELY IN THE WRONG. CMC blows.

Wed, 02/01/2012 - 10:24pm - Posted by: kittykat

there was no reason for this to happen. None whatsoever. Use the ****** crosswalk and CMC put up a ****** streetlight!!!!!

Wed, 02/01/2012 - 10:13pm - Posted by: Jennifer Perez

THIS IS VERY SAD AND MY CONDOLENCES GO OUT TO THE FAMILY OF THE VICTIM. THE COUNTY SHOULD DEFINITELY LIGHT UP THIS SECTION OF THE ROADWAY.
