OCEAN CITY — Police responded to a call for a possible suicidal subject inside a residence on the 100 block of East 14th Street, Tue., Feb. 21 at 10:44 a.m.

Police initially responding to the scene found a man in a rear bedroom holding a handgun on his chest. The handgun was pointed toward the bedroom door. Unable to evoke a response from the subject, officers were unable to determine if the subject was alive.

Officers then secured the property, making sure no one else was inside the residence. They established a perimeter of the area and contacted the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office SWAT team.

Homes within the immediate area of the residence were evacuated to ensure the safety of residents. Pedestrian, as well as motor vehicle traffic, within a one-block radius was re-routed.

SWAT team negotiators were unable to verbally communicate with the subject. A mechanical robot with a camera entered the property. Following entry of the device, members of the SWAT team physically entered the room where the subject had been located.

The SWAT team found the subject deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

An investigation is being conducted by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Ocean City Police Department and Cape May County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Wcrester means they should have had a mental health professional there because the police should be psychic

Wcrester- the article reads "Unable to evoke a response from the subject, officers were unable to determine if the subject was alive" If during the time they had the house surrounded, they never reported hearing a shot fired(which they didn't), it's likely this guy was dead before they even first showed up. Not sure how having training or having a "mental health professional" responding to a potentially dangerous scene can help a dead guy.

Another lesson in how the police are not trained or able to address a mental health crisis.

I wonder if a mental health professional was called in addition to SWAT?
