OCEAN CITY — City police responded to a call for an investigation at a residence in the 800 block of Asbury Avenue Sun. Jan. 1.

The incident was reported at 11:03 a.m. by neighbors who stated they heard yelling and screaming coming from a residence.

Upon their arrival at the scene, police found the victim running to police headquarters in an attempt to flee the attack and report the incident to police.

Inside the residence police located a woman and two children. The suspect, Ruy A. Reyes, was taken into custody at the scene. The woman was able to show officers where the knife was located inside the residence, thereby allowing officers to secure the weapon.

An investigation revealed that Reyes allegedly attacked the victim with the knife in a bedroom of the residence. The victim fought off Reyes and was able to run from the house without being injured.

According to police the victim and Reyes have known each other for several months. Both were residing at the same residence.

The investigation also revealed Reyes is an illegal alien from Mexico. A federal detainer was placed on Reyes by the Immigration Department. Municipal Court Judge Richard A. Russell also issued an arrest warrant.

Charges against Reyes include: aggravated assault with a weapon; possession of weapon for unlawful purpose; unlawful possession of weapon; and criminal mischief.

Reyes is currently being housed in the Cape May County Correctional Center in lieu of $15,000 full cash bail.
