GOSHEN -- An animal cruelty investigation is underway at the home of Dawn Scheld, 46, of 737 Goshen Road. Law enforcement officers with the state S.P.C.A. raided the home at 10 a.m., armed with a search warrant.

Six dogs were found buried in the backyard; officers said they stopped digging because they had enough evidence to charge her.

Fifty seven sick and malnourished dogs were being kept in unconscionable conditions inside a home covered with fecal matter and urine. Dogs were also housed outside, their pens were covered in feces. Their water was frozen and little evidence of food could be found.

The dogs are receiving emergency medical attention from a veterinarian who responded to the scene.

Sheld was arrested when she came home this afternoon. She is being charged with causing the death of animals. Officials said additional charges will be filed at the conclusion of their investigation. Sheld is lodged in the Cape May County Jail on $50,000 full cash bail. Official's said she had recently returned from North Carolina with five more dogs.

I am NOT CONDONING this womans actions but certainly NOT CONDEMNING either without all the facts. Judging by the pictures the dogs look well fed, not sure of the whole story if the dogs indeed died of old age and it is her property at leas...t they were buried (unlike some others where the live ones eat the carcasses)also they all seem to be big heavy fur dogs which doesnt mean they should live outside, but there are plenty of dog houses on the pics, they dont appear to have "lived" outside.Being one of many who plea daily for Gods emmissaries who are beat, unloved, starved, frozen and so many atrocities we see each day, she appears to be another case of someone with a big heart and the inability to say NO. I am amazed by how quick we are sometimes in judging when most of us ANIMAL LOVERS know in our hearts (at least I know) that I would ''LIKE" Tto "SAVE" EVERY DOG.Fortunatly I am aware of my financial, physical limitations, BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD ....how easy it would be to listen to our hearts and not REALITY and ANY ONE OF US could find ourselves OVERWHELMED. We beg for LOVING people to take just one more every second of every day. We rejoice when ONE is SAVED, Yet we turn like vipers when ONE has crossed the line to being a hoarder. Seems to me (judging from THIS STORY) the dogs in this womans care might disagree with our "judgements". This woman NEEDS HELP that is obvious beyond a doubt, perhaps she is one of many who reach out asking, begging for help, the many we may "pass over" in our quest to "SAVE AN URGENT", UNTILL we read of ONE who COMMITS SUICIDE the we cry (too late we clamour we would've,could've, when the grim reality is we DIDNT) I for one pray these dogs find GOOD LOVING HOMES, That they dont get euthanized after "waiting 7 days or 7 months for a rescue" and I PRAY THIS WOMAN GETS THE HELP SHE DESERVES!See More a few seconds ago · LikeUnlike.

Man, some of you have to much to say. I'm not even gonna read it. It's bad, very bad. No one should of had that many animals, PERIOD....

Tue, 12/21/2010 - 10:04pm - Posted by: flyers

I can tell you for a fact that they did not bring in those dogs at night. You can hear those dogs bark at all times at night and day. They could have made some type of heater for the water so it would not freeze in the winter. Don't forget they had dried up feces in their house. It was not fresh but old and dried up. How long has it been sitting on the floor. It would have to have been for a few days. And were there is poop there is pee... Just think what that house most smell like. If they dont take care of their own house how could they take care of 60 dogs. Also dont they have a child(ren)? I might be wrong but didn't they say they stopped digging when they found 6 dead dogs?

Tue, 12/21/2010 - 11:38am - Posted by: robbakley

the crap on the floor was dried up, and as for the redoing of the house its been like that for years. the spca didnt wait for them to leave the house, they came when they did end of story. and it was below freeing that day so why would any of the be outside all day in that. even if she did bring all 57 dogs in at night that doesnt change the fact that it was in the low 30's and she didnt care to leave them outside all day with their ice bowls. the media didnt twist anything around, there is evidence behind it all.

Mon, 12/20/2010 - 9:44pm - Posted by: localsonly86

ok i'm really getting tired of people believing everything they are told by the media. the video shows the outside of the house, which they are in the middle of redoing, the inside of the house which they are redoing, the dogs shown in the video near the house were mostly their personal pets and they come inside the house at night! As for the no food and frozen water, the dogs are given food every day and water every day, it cold so water freezes. The spca came at a time when no one was home and when the dogs had already eaten! as for the feces, dogs go to the bathroom, they clean up the feces all the time, again the spca came when no one was home. the spca likes to make people look worse then they really are! yes she did go a over board on the amount of dogs she brought but she cared for them. All of the dead dogs were dogs that were in the ground, one of the dogs just died was very old. the media likes to twist things around a bit so just don't believe everything you hear.

Mon, 12/20/2010 - 9:01pm - Posted by: robbakley

they said little evidence of food, not no food. so whats your point? and from what ive heard from people who have been on the property, there were dogs that were dead and werent buried. did you just look up some of the facts or did you try to pick out parts that you tried to twist around in order to defend this person? read the whole story and if thats not good enough for you then watch the video. the evidence is good enough for me to acknowledge that she did wrong here.

Mon, 12/20/2010 - 8:16pm - Posted by: redriveratdawn

"little evidence of food could be found." If there was so little food, then how come there is so much feces? You are lying about the food, or the poop - decide which one and stick with it. Also, the dead dogs were burried. What was she supposed to do with them? Put them in the trash or leave them out to rot? Exactly WHAT are the laws on burrying animals on one's property? I would like to know more about what happened here, beyoind all the sensationalism in the peper.

Exclusive: PETA’s Pet Killing Program Set a New Record in 2009 Public Records: PETA Found Adoptive Homes for Just 1 out of 300 Animals

Animal lovers worldwide now have access to more than a decade’s worth of proof that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) kills thousands of defenseless pets at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. Since 1998, PETA has opted to “put down” 23,640 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens instead of finding homes for them.

PETA’s “Animal Record” report for 2009, filed with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, shows that the animal rights group killed 97 percent of the dogs and cats in its care last year. During all of 2009, PETA found adoptive homes for just eight pets.

Just eight animals -- out of the 2,366 it took in. PETA just broke its own record.

Why would an animal rights group secretly kill animals at its headquarters? PETA’s continued silence on the matter makes it hard to say for sure. But from a cost-saving standpoint, PETA’s hypocrisy isn’t difficult to understand: Killing adoptable cats and dogs – and storing the bodies in a walk-in freezer until they can be cremated – requires far less money and effort than caring for the pets until they are adopted.

PETA has a $33 million annual budget. But instead of investing in the lives of the thousands of flesh and blood creatures in its care, the group spends millions on media campaigns telling Americans that eating meat, drinking milk, fishing, hunting, wearing leather shoes, and benefiting from medical research performed on lab rats are all “unethical.”

The bottom line: PETA’s leaders care more about cutting into their advertising budget than finding homes for the six pets they kill on average, every single day.

The Virginia Beach SPCA, just down the road from PETA’s Norfolk headquarters, manages to adopt out the vast majority of the animals in its care. And it does it on a shoestring budget.

Years of public outrage has not been enough to convince PETA to eliminate its pet eradication program.

Now the death toll of animals in PETA’s care has reached 23,640, including more than 2,000 pets last year. That’s not an animal charity. It’s a slaughterhouse.

to capemay08204 You asked why didn't Middle step in? New Jersey law gives the SPCA broad powers that supersede local authority in animal cruelty matters. I would also bet that the NJSPCA tried to get her to cooperate with them before they would have taken a drastic step like this "raid". I can't see that they were eager to come out to do this.

my first reaction to this story was like that of many of the other posts, believing that this person is cruel and is evil. I believe she had all the right intentions and things got out of control. I also believe she has a hoarding disorder as well. Lets face it as animal lovers we would like to save them all but it is also impossible. I have one dog and it gets expensive. It took to long to for the authorities to act and things turned out bad, as responsible citizens we all need to make a call when an animal is being abused or left outside she is no worse than the pet owners that tie their dogs to a tree.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions - Lack of self control, ignorence and letting your emotions get the best of you has never been a valid excuse for committing acts of cruelty. I can understand how someone could get in over their heads but it comes down to putting the animals in your care before yourself.Satisfying a "saint" complex is not good enough.

Pet overpopulation is a huge problem and many states that have aggressive spay/neuter programs are being stressed to the max with animals from states that neglect their responsibilities. But it is much easier to rescue animals in other states where home checks are not done and where their adoption policies aren't as strict.Plus -many of these states have cruel/inhumane methods of "euthanasia".

I live in Manchester NH which has an incredibly run shelter and some local rescue organizations which are amazing which affords me the luxery of being able to surrender strays knowing they will be vetted/trained if necessary and re-homed @95% of the time.I contribute to my shelters and donate necessities. I have 15 cats -all spayed/vetted/indoors. I have 4 dogs -two from southern states.I don't consider cats from southern/midwestern rescues, though the need is great there as NH still has a feline over population problem. My dogs from the south are all small breeds - in high demand here and in short supply in the shelters (though not in pet stores:( ) . My main points of contribution go for affordable spay/neuter clinics in the South/Midwest and non-profit public education groups.

It is heartbreaking and unacceptable that many of these animals lead horrible, sad, neglected lives at the hands of human ignorence - Its unfortunate that well meaning individuals give others who are spending money, energy, time and their hearts to rescue the right way - such a bad name.It is also an indicator that a huge problem exists in our opinions about animals in general and the lack of education and responsible nationwide stewardship regarding their welfare.

Mon, 12/20/2010 - 9:34am - Posted by: B Hugh Mane

In 2008, the last year statistics are available and with not all shelters reporting, New Jersey shelters euthanized 37, 674 dogs including:

Atlantic County - 657

Burlington County - 400

Camden County - 508

Cape May County - 56

Cumberland County - 430

While some of this number were sick or vicious and actually fit the definition of euthanasia (the peaceful end to a painful life) too many were killed for space or lack of homes.

There were/are plenty of dogs that needed rescuing right here in New Jersey. Now, the dogs rescued from this location will be utilizing precious space in NJ shelters and ending the life of some of the New Jersey dogs already in those shelters.

In addition, removing these dogs from Carolina shelters absolves Carolina from addressing the animal crisis they have in their state.

Many rescue from the Carolinas. Better that they rescue New Jersey dogs and send the money they spend traveling back and forth to the Carolinas to spay/neuter programs there. Or, they could write letters to the editor or mayors of communities which have particularly bad circumstances. They could contribute to HSUS or PETA efforts to help animals in the Carolinas. In short, there are myriad ways that the dogs in the Carolinas could be helped to a better life or a life at all.

Certainly, in a free society, people have the right to rescue animals where they see fit; however, they might consider cleaning up their own "house" first.

I think it is irresponsible to expose all her dogs and every dog that was at that vet that day to parvo.

What a shame.

Sun, 12/19/2010 - 7:42pm - Posted by: marmoracat

Maybe it took the NJSPCA 5 months to get to this "raid" because they obviously lack decent funding. I mean, look at their 80's cop car.

I'm a dog lover, and I hate to read or hear about dead dogs. There is no need to have 57 dogs either. It's got to cost a pretty penny to feed, and maintain 57 dogs. Lots of Vet visits etc. You can swear up and down that this woman is a great person, but to these dogs, she obviously wasn't if there were dogs in deplorable conditions in extreme temperatures. I'd hate to be a thirsty cold dog and my water bowl be a big ice cube. Our dogs are members of my family. I would never in a million years wish these kind of conditions on ANY dog.

Sun, 12/19/2010 - 4:13pm - Posted by: robbakley

look at the video, its kind of hard to defend this person when everyone can see the conditions.

Sun, 12/19/2010 - 3:36pm - Posted by: notryt1

i know Dawn also. This whole thing started when she brought dogs from NC this summer that had parvo. They died from the disease and SPCA found out when she took them to Vet. That is when spca stepped in they have been doing everything to cooperate with SPCA. SPCA could not find anything wrong this summer after checking all vet records, etc. They waited for a cold day and went there. I did not see a dog that looked like they were starving. The only dogs that would ever be under weight at her home would be the ones that were just rescued. She tried to run advertisements to adopt these dogs out. She is not an evil woman, she loves those dogs and just tried to save them from being killed at the shelters. She got over her head and has lost everything for them. Some people only believe what they read and don't look at the whole picture. I am glad that they have the dogs now and hopefully all of them get good warm homes. Also, I have a beloved dog buried in my back yard, am I a criminal? I don't think she should be in jail for animal cruelty.......this is not the case in this situation.

Sat, 12/18/2010 - 8:32pm - Posted by: jadegroffAllow me to set things straight. Dawn Scheld is not a cruel person. Our family went to their home in October and adopted a dog from them. After touring their facilities, we found NO evidence of neglect. It was quite the opposite. Both her and her husband were very helpful, introduced us to all their dogs by name and all the dogs seemed quite fond of them. They did the best that they could with what they had. The dog we adopted is absolutely wonderful! They provided paperwork that proved he had his shots and was examined by a vet. We took him to our own vet and he was found to be in perfect health. The one thing that Dawn requested was that we have him neutered, which we did. We believe, with all due respect, that the SPCA tends to blow things out of proportion. We went to 3 different SPCA facilities in hopes of adopting a dog. There are so many that need homes, however even though you want the SPCA to be thorough with a background check for the protection of the animals, they are a bit over the edge. We found Dawn's number in the paper and called her. They were very willing to help us find the dog that would suite us. We believe that their intentions were good, but that it got out of control - which is sad. They obviously cared more about the animals then their own home. That is the only time we met them and I have contacted her on facebook, while posting pictures of my dog. She has commented and has thanked us numerous times for loving and giving "Brody" his forever home. I am truly sorry for the outcome, but for whatever it's worth - please try to read between the lines and realize they are good people and wanted to save any animal they could - they just got in over their heads. I COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER.

Sun, 12/19/2010 - 2:44pm - Posted by: capemay08204

If the NJSPCA knew about this dog issue since July, why did they do nothing until now, 5 months later. It is a disgrace that it was allowed to continue. Only they know why they allowed this to happen for an additional 5 months from the time of first discovery. That is a disgrace for an organization who is supposed to be looking out for the welfare of sick and injured animals. Why did Middle Twp. do nothing? They have an animal control officer as well as code enforcement. Shame on both of them for not stepping in sooner to give these dogs a better living arrangement. Education goes a long way to prevent suffering and better living conditions than jail and fines which in this case could amount to over $50,000 and more than 20 years in jail acording to NJSPCA statutes. ( up to $1000 per violation and 6 months in jail per violation!) All of these dogs will need care, shelter and medical attention at whose expense?? If you are going to send donations, send them to the Cape May County Animal Shelter where many of these dogs will be kept. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, He lives in the hearts of all of us.

i love how people are saying" well they are horders and it's a sickness" it's a bunch of BULL!! jadegroff stated that they adopted a dog from these people. Horders don't let go of there stuff, so right there tells you that if they were "horders" they would never have adopted out a dog to these people! Call it what it is people.. animal abuse!!!

Sun, 12/19/2010 - 1:31am - Posted by: nichole

i love how people are making excuses for them... "they are horders"! give me a break... would you leave your child out in the cold with no food or water for days on end? then why the heck would you leave a pet out there? i would LOVE to rescue animals from the shelters that are going to be put down. i think it's horrible what they do to some of them, but i also realize that there is no way i could handle another dog and care for him the way he deserves to be, so i don't go and adopt one!! it's common sense!! it's people like this that make it sooo bad for these animals... now they will go to another shelter and because they all need sooo much medical treatment there chances of adoption are slim to none and they probably will be euthanised. this disgustes me and she should be charged to the fullest extent and maybe she will be an example for other people !!

Call animal control and report that location.

Keep calling until something is done for those dogs.

The secret is to have ONE dog at a time and take care of it and love it, no dog should ever be left outside..if you can't keep it inside and walk it and housebreak it don't get one.

I had a friend who took me to a woman's house on goshen rd one time. This woman breeds german shephards. She had pens all over the side and front of thr house and chickens and more dogs in the back yard. I cryed for days after that. Those poor dogs they need 2 be rescued also. I really was relieved when I saw this but I dnt think it's the same lady? I believe that the woman house I was taken 2 bred the shephards for the police...I hope her dogs arent still suffering. That is very sad. There is no excuse to take on more than you can afford plain and simple. She obviously couldn't afford 2 hire the help she needed. Now they all need lots of prayer.

Sat, 12/18/2010 - 11:16pm - Posted by: mc

Wish the court could impose a penalty of making the owner be tied up to a tree without food or water or shelter and be in the cold for 24/7..

Ever notice that for all they went through the Dogs will still wag there tails when they see someone?

Sat, 12/18/2010 - 11:00pm - Posted by: mc

Wish we could turn things around and let the owners of these animals get tied up outside in the cold without food and shelter and see how they like it.

Sat, 12/18/2010 - 10:41pm - Posted by: Peachy Pie

After reading the article, I feel that this woman should be punished along with her husband, for letting these poor animals suffer the way they did. I believe it should be made public, just for the fact that it may hopefully show others what could and will happen if they chose to do the same. It's obvious animal hoarding is a mental sickness, but I do believe that friends or family should've stepped in to get her help, which could've prevented her from going to jail and also have shortened the animals suffering. Thank God someone finally did something about this situation! and I pray that this woman gets the help she needs and that animals involved survive and find good homes.

If you have been thinking about adopting a dog, now is the time to do it. If you can't adopt think of volunteering or contributing to the work of the county animal shelter.

Sat, 12/18/2010 - 8:21pm - Posted by: B Hugh Mane

Tonight, dogs throughout the county are tied outside in the cold with little shelter and no comfort.

Take the time to help them to a better life. Check to learn if your community has ordinances which limit the time dogs can be outside on a chain.

County towns with such ordinances are Sea Isle, Ocean City, Middle, Lower, Upper, Wildwood and Wildwood Crest.

Make the call that will make a life more comfortable or save it.

That's what the heck is wrong with people today, so quick to form some REASON for trash scumbag people acting the way they do. What ever happen to calling a spade a spade? I personally don't care if a person like this truly does have something wrong with them, actions and behaviors toward people or ANIMALS in such a manner is against the law, and she needs to be tied out side on a short rope with no food or water in the coldest weather of the season, see how many psychological problems she has then.. What a disgusting excuse of a human being... people like her should be punished in the same way they caused harm.. You're a disgusting, repugnant piece of trash, and you don't deserve to have the breathe of life in your lungs

This woman is obviously a hoarder, and she is sick. Seems like she tried and soon lost it. Perhaps she would have been better suited to care for animals under the direction of the SPCA, or like organization who could assist with the expense involved in keeping an animal. I am not making excuses, just an observation. I think it is horrible too, that it took so long to end the suffering and bring aid to animals being kept in cages, in the cold, in feces filled areas with no care for days on end.

this is absolutly horrible. This woman better be punished for all that she did to these poor helpless animals. My heart aches for all the animals dead/alive in the situation. This is absolutly horrendous. How did she accumulate all of these animals and then come back with 5 more. ughh people have no consideration for animals. Animals should be treated like people in certain ways...just like humans animals deserve the proper love, care, shelter, food, and water. Thank goodness for the SPCAand police for all they are going to help these animals get out of her "care". This woman she be ashamed to hold her head up at night.
