OCEAN CITY – A tour through a designer show house might net you some great decorating tips, but at Windsong on Wesley, you’ll also have the satisfaction of making a difference. One hundred percent of the admission to this Ocean City show house will go to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a unique not-for-profit organization that has evolved from a young cancer patient’s front yard lemonade stand to a nationwide fundraising movement for childhood cancer.
The idea of a show house to fight childhood cancer began in a fifth grade classroom at the Bellhaven Middle School in Linwood, NJ, when students received a special visit from Liz Scott, mother to Alexandra Scott who started Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Liz told of Alex’s indomitable spirit, which inspired others, even as she battled her own cancer. Even after Alex passed away at age 8, people continue to be moved by her story and support her cause.
A student in the class, Stefen Himmelstein, age 10 approached his father, Robert, to ask how he could help. As owner of Surfside Casual Furniture in Somers Point, N.J., as well as the 2010 RNS Showhouse Windsong on Wesley in Ocean City, N.J., Robert Himmelstein worked directly with Alex’s Lemonade Stand to create a fundraiser.
Windsong on Wesley is located at 1501 Wesley Avenue, Ocean City, N.J., just off the Ocean City Boardwalk at 15th Street. The show house opens Memorial Day Weekend.
The show house will be open every weekend and holiday from Memorial Day through July 4, 2011, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person. Children, accompanied by a parent, may receive free hot dogs and lemonade from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Hot dogs will be provided by Dietz and Watson and cooked on a Wolf outdoor grill on Danver cabinetry. Special kids activities will be held on each Saturday, also from 12 noon to 3 p.m. that the show house is open.
Built in 1907, the show house is a Dutch Colonial that debuted as the 2010 RNS Show House at the Shore. For the Alex’s Lemonade Stand fundraiser, the home has been completely refurnished with Coastal Living furniture from the collection of Coastal Living magazine. Visitors touring the home will receive Coastal Living bags and magazines. In addition, they will have a chance to win any of three furniture items to be given away by Coastal Living Furniture.
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) had its beginnings in the front yard of young cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott. For four years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands have been held across the country by children, schools, businesses, and organizations, all to benefit ALSF. To date, her national campaign has raised over $40 million dollars for pediatric cancer research.
