COURT HOUSE – The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors approved the adoption of a resolution to support recent action taken by the Board of Chosen Freeholders calling for the removal of the security fencing on the Garden State Parkway installed between the Great Egg Harbor Bridge and Drag Channel.

According to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, the reasoning for the installation of this fencing is to provide protection of the bridges against terrorist attacks. The Chamber’s resolution points out that access to the bridges remains unprotected by boats and states that this fencing mars the beauty of these waterways while ignoring the basic tenants of the Garden State Parkway which has been managed for over 50 years with a commitment to preserving the undisturbed natural beauty of the landscape surrounding the highway. The fencing creates an ugly, unwelcoming, and negative image of Cape May County and our tourism area.

According to Chamber President Vicki Clark, “many residents and businesses have complained about the fencing which was installed without knowledge to the community’.

The mission of the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce is to be the voice of the business community by promoting tourism and economic development through legislative advocacy, marketing services, networking opportunities and educational programs for member businesses.
