WILDWOOD- At 1:55 p.m. Sun., Oct. 2,, Wildwood police and fire units responded to a report of a car with no driver, turning circles near 4900 Susquehanna Ave, between Rio Grande and Hand avenues.

According to the a member of the Wildwood Fire Department, the car went out of control when the driver got out of his seat in order to allow his passenger to switch seats with him and drive.

The car, believed to be an older Ford Thunderbird, then jumped into reverse on its own.

As it circled, one of the passengers attempted to jump back into the car to stop it. He sustained minor injuries.

Wildwood Fire Chief Chris D'Amico able to enter the driverless automobile and bring it to a safe stop. D'Amico said that he was able to get close to the car from the inside of the circle it was making.

"I got into the inside circle," he told the Herald. "It was easier with a smaller circle to close the distance."

"The window was down on the passenger side," D'Amico said. "I was able to climb into it and turn it off."

According to D'Amico the car sustained some damage where its door hit a pole.

The car was towed away from the scene.

to answer your question dave g. my buddy and i took our classic car out for a ride. i asked him if i could drive and he said yes. so he pulled into a empty parking lot behind the wildwood wawa, he put the car in park, we both got out and walked around the car to switch and the car slipped out of park and went into reverse thus starting the whole situation. we did not go anywhere other then around the car to switch. its an old car, things happen that are unexpected. everyone should just be happy that no one was seriously injured.

I have this video on my cell phone. I seen the guy jump through the window. I just have no clue how to upload the video. I was really confused bc there was no driver and the car was in circles all crazy!

Good job to that firefighter! Too bad we don't know his name. I'm guessing the biggest part of the story is missing. Why was there no driver? Where did he or she go? Looks like one of those old Fords that would easily fall into reverse. -Driver leaves car running, comes out of the house and sees that it took off. Must've figured it would run out of gas eventually and went back inside.

I saw this...the circle was 1/2 on hand avenue and 1/2 in the parking lot. It was circling pretty quickly. The driver's door was open and bent forward somewhat.

When I was in Wawa, somebody said that someone jumped in the car and stopped it. That took some guts and the guy should get some credit.
