WEST WILDWOOD — A dog was shot and killed by police after it attacked a woman walking on the 700 block of Glenwood Ave. and then turned on a police officer.
According to Capt. Lynn Frame of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, West Wildwood Police received a report of a female being attacked by a dog, identified as a pit bull mix, at approximately 4:15 p.m. Wed., Feb. 1.
A police officer responded to the call and was also attacked by the dog. The officer tried to manually subdue the animal and was unsuccessful, said Frame. The officer then shot one round, killing the dog instantly.
“The dog was off-leash and it attacked a pedestrian, biting her on the arm and leg,” said West Wildwood Code Enforcement Officer Chris Ridings. According to Ridings he saw the woman’s injuries after she was bitten.
The Prosecutor’s Office responded to the incident because of the discharge of an officer’s weapon.
“From our preliminary investigation, the officer acted properly,” said Frame. “We are continuing our investigation.”

The cop feared for his life, so he shot and killed the 20lb puppy. Thankfully there was no injuries from the stray bullet that was fired in the direction of the bystanders. Hopefully the kids that witnessed the shoting won't have nightmares. My condolences to the family. I think lessons can be learned from this tragedy, on both sides. The importance of responsible pet ownership, and maybe the police learning animal behaviour. Maybe a animal behaviour class, one that could be hands on. Working with a K9 and being attacked by one might, if face with a situation, a cop would know the difference between play and attack. Name calling and attacking each other in this forum will not change the out come of the incident, the deed is done. Its time to heal. Stop attacking each other.

MATERA- Having a pitbull "playfully" jump on you is about as alluring as having a lion do the same. Humans are still more important than dogs. I know that dissapoints a lot of people.

Wow.... blows me away that some of you are so quick to blame the police officer. There is a big difference in seeing a dog playfully jumping on someone and a dog showing aggression and attacking. The article also states that the officer was attacked and tried other means to subdue the dog. Granted pit bulls get a bad rap for being a vicious dog, which isn't true. Owners make their dogs act the way they do. Why should the officer risk injury to subdue an attacking animal? The fact that he tried a non lethal attempt 1st is proof enough that that attempt, whatever it was, wasn't sufficient. I also doubt highly that the officer would risk his career just to carelessly stop a dog. Officers are well trained to step into a situation, process the information quickly and choose the appropriate response. If you think I'm wrong Id be willing to bet that if I ran your name it wouldn't come back with a clear history.

Officers in New Jersey are not yet equipped with Tasers. It said in the article the Officer first tried to mechanically control the dog prior to using deadly force. You can reason with humans, you can't reason with dogs.

Control is one thing...a bullet is another I will go right out and say it...it was a dog...and it was attacking there are more weapons to use than a gun..If I run at an officer I am either going be tazed or hit with spray NOT SHOT. Beings a dog is less lethal than a human I question the actions of a cop that doesn't fire his weapon that much but knows nothing is gonna come from this.

mmattera so your saying it is 100% ok to have any dog OFF THIER leash.so what if the dog was a puppy .it was breaking the law by BEING off it;s leash(even if it was steps outside it;s own yard).PLUS IF YOU where there why did you not try and control the puppy as well as THE owner should have ,granted I was not there BUT I see mistakes in your post.YOUR as much at fault as the owner NOT the cop

You're lying MMattera... He's been a cop for over four years. He remained on scene. And no oficer would shoot to get their "Name out there." It would have the exact opposite effect. You are blatantly lying, that's terrible.

There have been so many negative comments about this unfortunate situation. This is a case of a gun happy new officer wanting to get his name out there. The owner was taking her puppy for a walk, when the puppy saw someone and wanted to play. They were next to her the entire time. After the officer shot this innocent puppy he was asked by the owners for his name/badge number and instead of following the rules, he got back into his car and left the scene. So can you tell me how everyone can agree with this rookie cop who would rather kill something instead of get to the real prob? Your stupid if you do.So for everyone who wants to throw the blame on the owner instead of where it belongs just ask yourself, do you punish your selves if your child does something wrong? And I just found out that the EMT's spoke with the owners and they didnt find a single bite mark on the woman that was "attacked" just a scratch from where the puppy jumped. So please get your facts straight before you run your mouth about something you dont need to be involved in anyways.

I love dogs, pit bulls and all other breeds, but given the choice of a dead dog or an injured person I'd take the dead dog any day, regardless if the dog was attacking another person or not if the officer thought he was going to be hurt by the dog he did the right thing. End of story.

I love how the article makes the cop out to be a hero, which he may very well be, just not in this particular incident. The cop shot the dog because he was afraid it was going to bite HIM according to the first reports to the Wildwood Leader. Not because he was trying to save the woman. Also this was so not at all what the puppy looked like, why the semi-not so needed cover up? I hear this cop is a great cop regardless of this incident. I'm just wondering why the headlines didn't read something more like "Cop shoots dog after reports of minor attack." Doesn't have the same ring does it?

These dogs belong behind bars in a zoo. How many more trajedies have to take place before people wake up?

This is a picture of a Pit Bull. It is not the one that was killed. Photos were sent to the herald, press etc.. Herald took 2 days and posted the above photo from MGN

Is the picture of the dog here actually the dog in question? The dog in the picture is clearly a pit bull on a leash, while the article states the dog was off leash and a "pit bull mix". I hate to see pit bulls given a bad name in our county yet again. This is a sad story for the poor woman who was attacked and the dog, whom I am assuming was never trained or cared for properly. I am hoping there is an investigation as to who this dog belonged to.
