NORTH WILDWOOD — The body of a Pennsylvania man reported missing in the ocean was found by city police at 1:14 a.m. Mon., July 30 in the surf at 21st Avenue.
The man, identified as Brad Smith, 52, of Horsham, Pa. had been reported missing in the ocean the evening of Fri., July 27 after he and his 7-year-old daughter were wading in knee-deep water, fell from a drop in the sand level and were caught in the undertow.
North Wildwood police received multiple calls at 5:36 p.m. Fri. July 27 of the incident. Officers responding to the scene discovered four subjects, two fathers with their daughters, had been walking in water near the beach. As they were walking they fell into the water from a drop in the sand. All four subjects were caught in an undertow.
One father and his daughter recovered and were able to return to the shore where they summoned a nearby jet ski operator to assist the other two. That operator was able to reach the 7-year-old girl and assist her to safety. At that point, the girl’s father disappeared into the water.
Upon discovery of the body local police notified the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, New Jersey Medical Examiner’s Office, state police Marine Unit and U.S. Coast Guard. Representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office and Medical Examiner’s Office arrived on scene and pronounced the body as dead at 2:25 a.m.
