CAPE MAY CITY-- Firefighters were called to the Pittsburgh Avenue beach at around 6:30 p.m., Sunday evening for a water rescue.

Deputy Fire Chief Richard Lundholm said they initiated a full water rescue response plan that included an after hours Beach Patrol unit and Town Bank dive team with the assistance of the Cape May City police department.

Lundholm said firefighters arrived on scene to find an off duty firefighter from Ardmore, Pa, performing CPR on a 35 year-old man who was pulled unresponsive from the water.

Lundholm said the man pulled from the water was on vacation from the Philadelphia area with his wife and children who were present during the rescue efforts.

The man was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center by Cape May City Fire Department and Atlanticare paramedics where despite their efforts he was pronounced dead.

Lundholm said the man's identity is not being released at this time.
