All Cigarette Smokers Are Litterers

To The Editor: In all discussions re-garding cigarette bans, the most recent in Cape May, there is a key factor that never gets brought up, and pardon me for being blunt, but here it is. All smokers are litterers. From their car windows, as they approach a store, as they sit at the beach, as they watch a ballgame in the stands, as they wait for a bus, as they walk down a sidewalk, on a paid break from their workplace, and on and on. They litter. They toss their still lit cigarettes from their hands without a thought. And some of them lower the bar of lazy littering even further by tossing their empty packs. I have offended oh, perhaps 2 percent of smokers who stub out their butts when outside and dispose of them, and I apologize to them. As for the remain-ing 98 percent, Planet Earth is your ashtray, and the rest of us are supposed to accept it. Really? Why? May I throw my beer cans in your front yard? No? Why? If cigarette users want to ignore health and environmental issues, and make a laugh-able claim to civil rights, they can try. They cannot avoid being labeled as people who litter, and people who don't care about public shared places really don't care much about other people. I wish for them they may wake up and either curtail their habit or at least clean up after their habit. TERRENCE O’NEILL Wildwood
