RIO GRANDE — The 60,000-square-foot Rio Grande Super Stop & Shop, 3401 Route 9 South, one of nine Stop & Shop markets that will be purchased by Wakefern Food Corp., parent company of ShopRite, will close. The future of that store is uncertain, while the other eight stores will reopen as ShopRites beginning at month’s end.
The Rio Grande Super Stop & Shop opened on Oct. 6, 2005 with 200 employes in the Grande Center Shopping Center, Routes 9 and 47.
At its grand opening, Assemblyman Nelson Albano (D-1st) lauded the store as offering its workers good union jobs with benefits. The store reportedly now has 100 employees, members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 152.
An advertisement in the July 11 Cape May County Herald’s print edition announces the pending closure with a display ad that states, “Everything must go. Store Closing Sale.”
It directs shoppers to the store for details. Those with a Stop & Shop card can get a variety of products for 25 percent off regular price, it states. Included in the sale are frozen foods, health and beauty care products, condiments, baking products, coffee, tea and hot cocoa, canned vegetables and tomatoes, jars of spaghetti sauce, soups and gravies.
The closure of the local store had been rumored for several months, but never confirmed by company officials.
Its closure comes in the wake of the opening, in mid-June, of a Wal-Mart store that sells many grocery items. That store is located at the northern end of the shopping center, and sells many grocery items. Stop & Shop is at the south end of the same center.

They are closing stores all over and are trying to get bigger and bigger to compete with walmart and don't realize that all great things implode. Even their 60,000 foot stores arent big enough anymore.

Stop & Shop and it's parent company Royal Ahold are simply the worst. They are closing stores all over and are trying to get bigger and bigger to compete with walmart and don't realize that all great things implode. Even their 60,000 foot stores arent big enough anymore. They'd rob you of your front lawn and set up a cereal aisle on it if they could. Good riddance!
The more Stop & Shop's close the better.

I am very sad to hear Stop and Shop is closing. The quality of their meat and produce is excellent. While their prices were more expensive than Shop-Rite, I bought whatever was on sale. Fewer choices are never a good thing.

I am sorry to see stop and shop go, it gave a lot of people, a good job. I don't think they competed with the other markets. I thought they were very high priced. I hope someone else gives it a go. Maybe, Wal Mart will take it over to make a Super Walmart. J&J

i hated that store. A lot of the employees were rude.....good riddance! Too bad for the good hard-working employees who will now be out of work in an already low-paying, no-job market. K-mart will be next!!

900 full time and part time workers, many of them with 15 and 20 years in the grocery business are losing their jobs and medical benefits. Stop & Sop never even tried to compete in South Jersey. The had the people and finances to do the job right but never made an effort to succede in this market. What a crime. C.R.
