LOWER TOWNSHIP -- The Southern State Regional Medical Examiner's office has ruled the death of Alton Whealton, 49, of Alliance, N.C. an accidental drowning following an autopsy that was performed at Shore Memorial Hospital on Monday, March 29, according to State Police.
Whealton was the captain of a scallop boat the Lilly Belle, of New Bern, N.C. According to state police, Whealton had returned from a ten day fishing trip on Friday, March 26th and was docked at Atlantic Cape Fisheries in Cape May.
Whealton's lifeless body was found Saturday morning floating in the water near Lund's Fisheries.
The circumstances surrounding how Whealton drowned are still under investigation. State police said it's possible Whealton slipped while attempting to board the Lilly Belle.

I agree Luke. If you get too many agencies involved it can be a cluster, with reports coming from all agencies involved. It was the NJSP's jurisdiction. Proper procedure was followed. Now if there was a circumstance where the body started floating away, then one of the other agancies would have had to step up and recover it.

Its not uncommon for other LEOs to be on stand-by and secure an area while awaiting for the investigative authority who has jurisdiction. In this case it is the state police. It also not uncommon to secure for extended (2-3 hours) times at crime scenes that occur around high crime areas or other low staffed precincts or stations, in this case the NW barracks. Its a realistic part of the business. In order for these investigations to be done effectively, there are only so many qualified individuals, especially when foul play is expected dealing with water. A thorough investigation is SOP and also owed to his family.

Tue, 03/30/2010 - 10:09am - Posted by: Vag_LoverIts always sad to hear of a tragedy like this. Not to place the blame but shouldn't the Coast Guard be a little more strict with their inspections so commercial boats are less likely to sink? Was anybody else on board when the boat went down?
Where in the world did you get your information about his boat sinking? Did I miss another article somewhere?

The boat didnt sink, it has nothign to do with the coast guard doing inspections of the boat so stop trying to blame everyone else.

Yes, cmres2, if you call the local number it is sometimes answered by another station out of the area. Most times the officers are responding from over an hour away. They aren't sitting inside the station waiting for calls, they are out in the field working.

Scorpion:
When you say "manned" you are referring to marine officers just sitting in the barrack waiting for calls. Right? Because that office is always staffed but yes, they're out working..... it's not like they're sitting there waiting for 911 calls or marine emergencies.
So in that respect, this Villas dude is out of line. The Marine police were probably somehwere working. North Wildwood and Cape May aren't the only places in NJ w/ water. They were somewhere else working...
Lets basically equate what Villas outsider said to this:
State Police have one barrack in Jersey City and there's a state police type matter/emergency down here and we get mad at them for taking long to get here....
Villas dude, please think before you speak. Maybe you could achieve at least sounding intelligent.

Most don't realize that the NJSP Marine Barracks in North Wildwood isn't always manned. They may not have had anyone in the area and had to come from farther up North. A lesson for all you vacationers who happen to look out your window and see "blinking lights" in the ocean or the back bay or a jet-ski in the inlet behind Moore's beach or on Champagne Island. Get a pair of binoculars if you are going to scout the waters for people in distress. City slickers don't know the difference between people having fun and real trouble. You should be fined for making false reports.

It took the Marine State Police to get to the seen by boat almost 3hrs,from North Wildwood, while the Lower Police and the US Coast guard had to wait for them,And the poor man flooded in the water between boats. What a crime it took that long from North Wildwood.I bet if it was at the Trump Marine they would of been there in no time.
