TRENTON -- The Senate approved a bill 38-0 to fight steroid abuse by New Jersey students.

The bill (S-834) would require the state Department of Education and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association to devise a random steroid-testing program of student-athletes who qualify to compete in championship tournaments.

Sponsored by Sen. Richard Codey (D-Essex), the bill also requires public school coaches, and those at the nonpublic school interscholastic level, to create programs to reduce the use of steroids and performance-enhancing supplements.

The bill now heads to the Assembly for consideration.
