ROMULUS, Mich. -- A passenger on an international flight bound for the United States Friday ignited a small explosive device shortly before landing.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said "passengers may notice additional screening measures put into place to ensure the safety of the traveling public on domestic and international flights," following what the White House is calling an "attempted terrorist attack".

U.S. officials say a Northwest Airlines passenger from Nigeria said he was acting on behalf of al-Qaida when he tried to blow up a flight Friday as it landed in Detroit.

The flight began in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to Detroit.

Federal officials identified the man as Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, of Nigeria, according to NBC.

According to published reports, U.S. intelligence officials said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it.

NBC reports the man told investigators he wanted to set off a bomb over the United States and the incident is being handled as a possible terrorism attack by both law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

Officials said the man is being treated at the burn unit of the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.

The White House issued a statement saying President Obama was informed about the incident as he vacationed in Hawaii. The President spoke with his Homeland Security and Counter-terrorism advisors. The statement said the President "instructed that all appropriate measures be taken to increase security for air travel. The President is actively monitoring the situation and is receiving regular updates."

So what is wrong with profiling??? It was not a white gramma travelling home, or an African American family with children comming home from vacation. It was not a hispanic farm worker travelling to Detroit. It was a BLACK man from NIGERIA! No, I am not racist. But, when it comes to terrorism, these groups complain about profiling. I hate to fly as TSA usually picks me out for a search. I am a silver haired old lady with a prosthetic joint. The SOB is now receiving medical care at our expense for his burns. Too bad I am not his nurse. He would get his IV infiltrated with his own medicine. Ooops, I can't say that or I might be labeled as a terrorist and put on the do not fly list!

Was it not Obama that said recently that their is no more terrorism, this is such a joke, these people are never going to stop til we issue them a good final blow, All of obama's bowing down to these people all over the world have done nothing to stop all these terrorist, I would even say when Obama gets back from Hawaii that he will tell the public we shouldn't jump to conclusions, that this man is connected to any terrorist group, this president is so weak on terrorism that its pathetic. We will be hit again, just watch!!!!!

I imagine that our illustrious President will invite his fellow African to the White House, along with the Pilot of the plane, to have a beer and discuss how to avoid these misunderstandings in the future!
