He's lucky to be breathing right now. It seems that kids always learn the hard way.

I do believe that this is not his first accident either, is it not? And I do believe that his past accident was a rollover too, in a jeep.

What we know is license suspensions, insurance surcharges, state surcharges, DUI patrols, DUI check points, etc etc just DON"T WORK! The Federal Govt waste millions of dollars every year to pay local police overtime to increase DUI patrols and check points. We need a new approach to this problem. I don't believe people start out their evening to become a drunk driver, maybe all cars should come equipped with an interlocking device. I don't know but I do know the present system DOESN'T work.

Raise what to 21? The age to purchase/consume alcohol is 21..I never said it wasn't-reread my post again.
Most liquor stores have video surveillance systems in place already. It's getting the 18 year old to rat his 21 year old friend out that's the problem. It just won't happen. Proving that the 21 year old that walked in and bought that 12 pack that ended up in the hands of an 18 year old is going to be tough with out the 18 year old ratting his friend out.
I like the idea of jail time, but it'll never fly, just like most drug charges. People get caught with a small amount of drugs and they walk that day with probation-seriously what a joke.
Loss of license is a great tool in my opinion-also not allowing insurance companies to insure vehicles they own during the time of their license being suspended is another good tactic.
Also the county jail won't take people who are drunk. They only accept sober people.

Picture 2 of 3, beer cans are laying behind the car.
The problem isn't the alcohol. It's the irresponsible users of it, as well as who ever is making it available to 18 year olds, such as in this case.
They need to increase the first time offense of DUI to loss of license for one year, and add on more fines. For those under 21, the first time penalty should be loss of license until age 21, not less than 1 year. The current penalties and fines obviously aren't enough to scare people/deter them from driving drunk. Also more police patrols are needed to catch these drunks. The police are being WAY too reactive anymore, and need to be much more proactive, especially with drunks.
Take a ride at 2am, and witness for yourself how many drunks are on the road.

Picture 3 of 3 should be posted in every high school and bar in the country. Thankfully everyone is going home after this one. When will our culture wake up to the damage done by alchohol and drugs?
