MIDDLE TOWNSHIP POLICE RELEASE

On Saturday November 14, 2009 between the hours of 10 am to 2 pm Middle Township Police will be hosting Operation Medicine Cabinet This is a DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) initiative to help dispose of prescription medication that is expired or no longer needed.

Officers will be at the Walgreens located at Route 9 and Linden lane across from the Lowes. They will be there to help dispose of your old prescriptions and answer any questions that you may have. If you want to remain anonymous, you can. Just come in and place your medications in the box. There will be no questions asked.

"This operation will reduce the availability of potent drugs that lead kids down a path to addiction,'' New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram said. "We can't break a cycle of dependence if powerful prescription drugs are stashed in our own homes, tucked away in drawers and cabinets."

According to McAleer and Valente, the 2007 study by the National Study of Drug-Use and Health, 70% of people who abuse prescription pain relievers say they got them from friends or relatives and the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), reports that upwards of 9 million people use prescription medication for non-medical uses. They noted that the 2007 Partnership for a Drug Free New Jersey (PDFNJ) Principals Survey found that half of the principals surveyed said that prescription drugs are abused more than twice that of ecstasy and cocaine by New Jersey Middle School students.

Disposing of expired prescription drugs is good thing, but should it be the role of law enforcement to create this initiative? It seems to me that the FDA would be more appropriate to handle such a worthy cause. Doesn't law enforcement have enough on it's plate right now?
