CAPE MAY- A group of 20 parents, students, alumni of Our Lady Star of the Sea School and business owners held a peaceful protest on the Washington Street Mall in front of the church Oct. 11.

The protesters complained Our Lady Star of the Sea Church is currently undergoing millions of dollars in renovations while the Catholic Diocese of Camden plans to close to the school in September 2010. Parents received a letter May 12 informing them the school will close its doors in September 2010 due to low enrollment. The letter informed parents the school will merge with St. Ann’s Regional School in Wildwood.

Supporters of the school donated nearly $500 in two hours of the protest.

The Star of the Sea School Foundation will hold a fundraiser Saturday Oct. 17 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the Moonfish Grill. 416 S. Broadway, West Cape May. The event includes food, live music and a silent and Chinese Auction.

According to foundation member Marie Gegan, the intention of the foundation is to show overwhelming support the school has by raising money, so Bishop Joseph Galante will understand how vital the school is to Cape May.

Half the people protesting are all from one family. I myself went to OLSOS and yes its a great school but raising money and holding protest isn't gonna change the bishops mind. You all can do whatever you want but if they want the school closed then they will close the school. SImple as that. It might be better for all you save star of the sea advocates to take your time and energy and just go with the flow and do everything possible to make the transition just go as smoothly as possible.
