NORTH WILDWOOD — It was evident in the amount of green shirts, shortage of plastic beer cups at the supermarket and flags proudly displaying the colors of orange, white and green that the Irish invasion was in full force.
The 18th Annual Irish Fall Festival came to the Wildwoods Sept. 24-27 and with it came thousands of people eager to enjoy a weekend-long party that celebrates Irish heritage with dancing, music, food and crafts.
In order to deal with the amount of people that attend the annual festival, the city had to pay for additional crowd control. On Sept. 15 the city inked an agreement with the county Sheriff’s Department. The city will compensate the additional Sheriff’s Department staff $50.00 per hour per officer for an amount not to exceed $25,000.
The festivities began the evening of Sept. 23 but teed off in earnest on Sept. 24, with a golf tournament at the Avalon Golf Club and continued with amateur boxing at the music tent at Olde New Jersey and Spruce avenues.
Festivities on Sept. 26 kicked off with a 5K run at the AOH tent, located between 1st and 2nd avenues on Olde New Jersey Avenue and the Brian Riley Pipe Exhibition.
On Sept. 27, the festival wrapped up with a parade at 24th and Surf Avenues and continuing to Spruce and Olde New Jersey avenues. Niall Burgess, Consul General of Ireland, served as the Grand Marshall.
Due to the large attendance the festival attracts, trolleys and buses looped continuously in North Wildwood from 3rd and New Jersey avenues, south on New Jersey Avenue, east on 26th Avenue and north on Surf Avenue.

Local, and what were these "crimes" that occured? NW gets 2 motor vehicle accidents and you people do is whine and whine about the cities safety. I attended the festival on more than one occassion last weekend and not once did I not feel "safe"? You people are ridiculous go back to your cubicles and stop blaming the police/sherrifs department for things that can't be controlled. Accidents are going to happen regardless of a festival and how do you know those accidents are even truely a result of the irish festival? You people need to toughen up and realize what real crime is and stop complaning about a drinking festival or obama.

Irish Fest has gotten out of hand. People are reckless. Lives are at stake. At what point do we care about the financial gains of businesses vs the lives of people???? It has to stop or have much more control. Maybe the National Guard needs to be asked for help because it is obvious that North Wldwood 's Police & the CMC Sheriff's office cannot handle the crimes that take place. This is not a criticism to either because it's just a bigger problem than they are expected to handle. DEAL OR DROP!!!!!

No one said anything about the Irish. It's the drunken fools of all nationalities that have ruined what once was a delightful festival.

that's so not true most irish aren't all drunks. you'd get some irish that don't know how to hold there drink but then again you get people in every country that don't know how to hold there drink. that's just a stupid excuse made up by people to hate the irish. saying that all irish are drunks is like saying all asians are good at math.

You mean the drunks invaded North Wildwood. It's truly a shame. What started out as a nice family festival & fundraiser has turned into a drunken debauchery.
