NORTH WILDWOOD - The mostly state funded North Wildwood beach replenishment is underway as of last week and it will go well into November.
The project is being worked on 24 hours per day to get the sand dunes completed. The base of the sand dunes will be 100 feet and the top will be 14 feet above the high tide level. After the sand dunes are completed the beach will be widened to 300 feet. As part of the project, at the end of each block there will be ramps to go over the sand dunes, 4 or 5 of them will be handicapped accessible. Then there will be the planting of tens of thousands of dune grass stalks. The project will extend all the way to the edge of Wildwood.
Tom McElroy, who lives on New York Avenue in North Wildwood, is very unhappy about the new sand dunes as is many others. He and his wife go to 3rd Avenue most mornings to sit on the benches and watch the peaceful ocean while they have a cup of coffee and sometimes a breakfast sandwich. He now knows those peaceful mornings are over. Tom also wonders why the state is spending this money when they are broke.
Another spectator says North Wildwood is messing with Mother Nature, she will bring in a big storm and wash everything away. A third local says they are cutting back on social security and wasting this money instead of helping the retirees.
A few others were questioning why they weren’t informed of the sand dunes. There were presentations to town council and a public forum concerning the beach replenishment. The North Wildwood residents said they thought it was only going to be adding to the beach, they had no idea about the dunes otherwise they would have been there.

It is not about restoring nature's beauty. The majesty of the sea is beautiful in itself. How are old people and women with children supposed to get over those dunes (Yes they will have to go over them. There will not be cut-throughs.) You people are either stupid or just plain crazy. These dunes are bad.

I am glad to see the sand dune replenishment well under way. It is neccesary for everybody and everything. I commend Wildwood for their efforts to retore one of Mother Nature's beauties. I must say though, the mess they made of Surf Ave, between 26th and 19th is tragic. Who designed that death trap. I can't see one benefit in the whole mess. Don't tell me it was to gain parking revenue. I counted the new parking spots and figured out the spots that they lost. I believe it's a push. The only thing I think they can gain revenue on is writing traffic tickets to those who accidently turn and go in the wrong direction when they approach the very confusing area the first time or when they write accident reports. Somebody is going to get killed in that area. I even heard that they are going to extend the maze further down Surf Ave. STOP THE INSANITY. Tear out that new stuff and put it back the way it was..

You liberal environmental nuts are out of control. You could care less about the beach and tourism. You only care about birds and turtles. You show your true intentions when you use phrases like "preserve natural beauty" and "change is hard to accept."
HEAVEN FORBID THAT PEOPLE USE OR ENJOY YOUR PRECIOUS DUNES. I SUPPOSE YOU THINK THE BIRDS ARE MORE IMPORTANT.
What do you mean by "who said it was just for one group of people to enjoy?? " That shows your hostility toward people with ocean front property.
For you people, this has nothing to do with beach replenishment or making it nice for people. For you, it is "nature above everything."
Sand dunes do not protect the island. IT IS SAND. It gets washed away with everything else. Seawalls would protect the island, but environmental nuts like you people do not want them, because they protect buildings and the habitats of PEOPLE.

After all this money & effort to build the dunes, North Wildwood better get serious about protecting them. They have never enforced the "Keep off Dunes" regulations. People have walked all over them for decades as evidenced by the well worn walking paths all over them. I've even seen professional photographers pose families for pictures on the dunes. New signs need to be posted warning of the fines and then the ordinance actually needs to be ENFORCED. This will finally give the four wheeler beach police something productive to do.

yes, change is sometimes really hard to accept. however, our family has been coming to new jersey shore for over 22 years and i must admit the last 2 years, the area of north wildwood beaches has looked the worst i have ever seen. the construction process needs to be done to preserve the beauty of this area. over time , people who have retired in this area will see that. sometimes taking away a small part of what we think is "rightly ours" and giving it back to everyone to enjoy for years to come, is the best solution. besides, who said it was just for one group of people to enjoy?? i am close to retirement in the next 5 years and my husband and i hope to retire in the area near cape may. my children and soon to be grandchildren love north wildwood. kudos to "making a difference" and let us always be a part of the solution and not the problem.!

So what do these old folks want out of life? Do they want the whole island to be washed into the sea? Where would they enjoy their "breakfast sandwiches" then? What the heck does Social Security have to do with this? Not everyone is trying to steal from you so stop being so self-centered and think about future generations (yes...that means people under the age of 65) who want to enjoy this island.

And if a bad Nor'Easter or Hurricane come through the same people would be complaining that a sand dune replenishment project didn't happen.....
