To The Editor: This sign was hanging outside the lovely home at the corner of 87th and First Street in Stone Harbor, which is about to be demolished: “Sad…It is sinful that such a lovely home and monument in the Stone Harbor community is about to be demolished. While it is understood that the new owners have the legal right to make this decision, and we wish them happiness, as taxpaying residents of this community, we do have a voice. We bought in Stone Harbor years ago for its charm and neighborhood feel. These lovely old homes reflect the nature of the many wonderful residents we know and love. We thought in Stone Harbor, beauty and tradition meant something. That history was more important than money and size. If this is the direction of this community, this is a sad day for Stone Harbor.” The note included many signatures. JEAN FUCHS Stone Harbor

The time to cry about this was roughly 1998, when every bartender, waitress and part time roofer within 20 miles decided they needed to jump on the real estate train. People with homes they bought for the price of today's Volkswagen Jetta became millionaires nearly overnight. You had realtors cold calling homeowners randomly inquiring if they were interested in selling...PA tagged Mercedes pulling up to job sites asking about a half built shell of a house and what the price was. The real estate market was a hyper profitabl circus for almost a decade, now its time to reap.
