CAPE MAY — On Aug. 8, a group of 27 athletes/friends got together for the first Cape May Island 5-5-5 Triathlon to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

It was a unique triathlon with five miles for each portion of the event that took swimmers from Poverty Beach in Cape May to the Concrete Ship at Sunset Beach, then participants rode beach cruisers bicycles rode up and down Sunset Boulevard followed by a run that went from Broadway Avenue to Poverty Beach and back to finish at Cape May Beach Patrol Headquarters.

The event raised $5,000 for the American Cancer Society.

“We were unsure as to how the event would turn out but the weather was perfect, no one suffered any major injuries, said Chad DeSatnick. “We had ample water support from power boats, paddle boards, kayaks and row boats so it turned out to be an amazing day with some serious fundraising, so we are all very excited.”

A representative from the American Cancer Society branch in Mays Landing will be at Cape May Beach Patrol Headquarters today (Monday) at 4:30 p.m. to receive the check.
