For the second weekend in a row, rain forced drivers in the Sprint Cup Series to race on Monday afternoon. Race results were not available at press time for this edition. Check the NASCAR Nation blog online at cmcherald.com for complete results.
This weekend’s race, at the road course of Watkins Gen International Raceway, presented the age-old question of whether or not Sprint Cup teams would use rain tires at road courses. The NASCAR Nationwide Series used Goodyear rain tires last season at Montreal, and there have been talks that the Sprint Cup Series may be considering the tires for road course races at Watkins Glen and Infineon.
“For the level of competition that we have in the Sprint Cup Series and as the stakes continue to rise from a competition standpoint, a sponsorship standpoint, a championship standpoint, we’d be best served to run the Sprint Cup Series on dry race tracks,” NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said Sunday at Watkins Glen. “We feel like that would be better for competition, that would better for the level of racing that the fans are accustomed to seeing.”
Nationwide Series:
The Nationwide Series had rain tires prepared for last Saturday, but the storms held off. Well, from the sky, that is. Joey Logano and Robby Gordon created a little storm of their own, while Marcos Ambrose cruised to his second career Nationwide Series victory.
Logano and Gordon made contact several times late in the race before contact caused Logano to crash hard into the tire barrier. Following the race, the two exchanged harsh words with each other. Keep an eye out for this rivalry to continue.
Ambrose led a race- high 26 laps en route to his victory.
Kyle Busch became only the second driver in NASCAR history two finish either first or second in ten consecutive races, bringing home a second place finish. Carl Edwards was third, followed by Kevin Harvick in fourth and Ron Fellows in fifth.
Other News: In a somewhat shocking move, Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse has announced that they will not renew their sponsorship deal of Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N. C. The company will continue to sponsor Sprint Cup Series champion’s No. 48 Chevrolet.
The track’s owner, Speedway Motorsports, Inc., is likely to search for a new title sponsor, but the track is expected to be renamed to its original title, Charlotte Motor Speedway, if none is found.
Coming Up: The Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series head to the Michigan International Speedway for a weekend of high-speed action in the Motor City.
