AVALON – Avalon Police Chief David Dean issued the following letter to residents and visitors concerning parking facing the opposite direction of traffic:

“Parking facing in the opposite direction of travel, besides being illegal, presents an imminent safety hazard to drivers, pedestrians, and other vehicles on our roadways.

“In order to accomplish this particular parking maneuver, the driver must first cross an on-coming lane of travel. Once this has been accomplished, the driver must cross against on-coming traffic once more when leaving the parking spot.

“In short, one must commit two moving violations in order to commit an illegal parking offense. Additionally, the driver’s line of sight is seriously compromised upon leaving the spot by the fact that the driver’s position is curbside, not street-side, and therefore blocked by other parked vehicles or obstructions: bicyclists, pedestrians, as well as other cars, may be approaching unseen.

“The Avalon Police Department has grown concerned at what appears to be a growing laxity regarding this issue and its possible ramifications on the safety of our citizens. To this end, we have begun to enforce the parking statute governing this violation to as great an extent as our resources allow.

“I’m reaching out to you all now to make you aware of our effort and to request your cooperation and compliance in this simple, but important, matter.

“Please take a moment also to make sure your family members, visitors, and friends are made familiar with this state statute as well as our enforcement efforts.”

Same problem in Stone Harbor. Why don't their police enforce the rules.Well the obious reason is that they don't want to scare the shoobies away. Forget safety, who is telling them not to enforce the laws. They just replaced all the retired cops, lets see them get to work.

So remember everyone when parking make sure you make the illegal u-turn first so your facing the right way....i could see this being a problem on major streets but most of the cross streets are not that wide your practically driving in the middle anyway most of the time. So are you really crossing the so called lanes? I could see pulling out being a problem as far as not being able to see but as long as you got your trusty wing man you should be ok...Oh and WoW can eat it... EVERQUEST II !!!!!

A quality of life issue, cassandra62, really! I feel sorry for you. If the direction other people park their cars messes up your life, you better get help. Its all about getting money from the tourist. I've lived here my entire life and whether it's the township cops hiding behind the bushes on Rt 47 coming into Wildwood or the 2 North Wildwood cops detailed to 30 mph speed trap entering NW its for 1 reason harass the tourist and grab their hard earned money. We better wise up just look around the wildwoods in the winter, do we want this year round, keep up the harassment and the people will go elsewhere.

Are the Police going to ticket themselves? I regularly see their cars parked against traffic.
Avalon wants to be like Ocean City.
"Oh my god, you parked an inch too far from the curb, here's a ticket! "
"You did 26mph in a 25mph zone, here's a ticket!"

Quoting Chief Dean:
“In order to accomplish this particular parking maneuver, the driver must first cross an on-coming lane of travel."
I have to cross the on-coming lane of travel to make a left hand turn at an intersection, or to turn into a driveway on the left hand side of the street. With cars parked on either side of a driveway that I am parked in, I cannot safely see the traffic on any street.

Why don't they go enforce the STATE law of "no parking with in 50 feet of a traffic control device"

Wait, that's right the island towns(Avalon included) blatantly disregarded the safety of the motoring public and allowed parking up to 25 feet from the traffic control device to allow for more parking spots.

I guess they need to make some money by issuing parking tickets to help pay for that MONSTROUS building they have constructed.

As Albie 27 posted this has been long overdue. A few years ago I went up and complained about somebody who always parked the wrong way , I was told they didn't enforce that regulation, after a little talk a officer went out and told the parties to move their cars. The next week they were back at it. This is a quality of life issue, I wonder what happened that they decided to get out of their cars and issue tickets. Did somone can hit by thses careless fools?

Wrong. This is entirely needed and long overdue. Herds of nitwits park this way and its indeed a terrible hazard, especially at night. Let the police do real police work??? This is Avalon we're talking about, parking citations are about as exciting as it gets aside from a drunk or two pissing up the wall of the Wawa, or a couple stolen bicycles. Graded on a curve against a major metro area, parking tickets here are roughly on par with armed robbery.

WOW the police chief keeping his town safe by ordering PARKING TICKETS.......makes me feel safer when in Avalon. Does anybody think it has anything to do with "revenue producing"? Let the police do real police work, give the parking ticket book to a meter maid.
