The libraries of Cape May County always have something exciting going on. Upcoming events include:

Scholastic Book Fair at Main Library: Celebrating “Be Creative at the Cape May County Library” summer reading program, children can purchase one book and get the second one free at a special Scholastic Book Fair held July 13 through July 17 at the Main Library, 30 Mechanic St., Cape May Court House.

Hundreds of books for every price range, interest and reading level are offered for sale along with games, toys and stuffed animals. This sale is for preschoolers, elementary, middle and high school students. Please call 463-6350 or visit www.cmclibrary.org

Clifford, the big red loveable dog, comes to visit: Clifford will join librarians as they celebrate the “Be Creative at the Cape May County Library,” 2009 Summer Reading Program. The children’s librarians will read great books, sing songs and then Clifford will meet his fans. Grand fun for the youngest of children. “Sing Your Heart Out” at Upper Branch Library: The Cape May County Library offers “Fearless Singing,” at 4 p.m. on Fridays, July 17 through Aug. 14. The classes, open to ages 14 through adult, Upper Cape Branch Library, 2050 Route 631, Petersburg.

Bring a karaoke track you like or sheet music; if not you’ll be assigned a song to sing. Everyone will sing together, sing solo and sing out loud to unlock your vocal potential, expand your lungs, release your spirit and sing your heart out.

The program is led by master teacher and singer Nancy Fox of “SING!” Fox Vocal Arts Studio of Ocean City.

Musical Performance at Local Libraries: Everyone makes music with “The Wizard of Sound,” Jeff Munsick at the Cape May County library. Munsick tells stories, sings and plays the banjo, guitar, accordion and harmonica.

Woodcarving Classes at Lower Branch Library: Explore the art of woodcarving for both beginners and advanced woodcarvers, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays July 11 until Aug. 1, Lower Cape Branch Library, 2600 Bayshore Road, Villas.

The class is under the tutelage of Dale and Audrey Unkle who have been teaching woodcarving classes for ten years.

There is no charge for the classes and beginner patterns, usually a turtle, fish, or dolphin will be provided. A starter kit will be available for $25 for those who need one and a bear pattern will be supplied for advanced woodcarvers.

Teen Craft Night at Upper Library: Teens are invited to participate on Wednesday, July 22 at Craft Night from 5-7 p.m., Upper Cape Library located at 2050 Route 631 in Petersburg. Teens will create their own journals using recycled paper, old books and other mediums.

Talk on Green Cleaning Methods at Library: Learn about “Green Cleaning” at the Cape May County Library, 30 Mechanic St., Cape May Court House, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 9. The presentation by Elaine Shaughnessy provides information on healthier ways to clean in today’s world.

By using herbs and other natural ingredients that are good cleaning agents and easy to make, you lessen your indoor toxins. Useful tips along with green cleaning recipes are offered during the presentation.

Teens – Create Your Own Comic Book:

The workshop is from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 8 at the Main Library, 30 Mechanic St., Cape May Court House.

Under the tutelage of famed illustrators and authors Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman, learn how to create a graphic novel by learning illustration and script writing.
